SOUTH MIAMI, Fla. (AP) - Miami Hurricanes reserve safety Willie Cooper was shot in the buttocks when confronted in his yard Friday morning by an unknown person who fled after another player returned gunfire.

Police said Cooper was able to walk after being shot and the injury wasn't believed to be serious, but he was taken to a hospital for treatment.
After Cooper was shot, teammate and roommate Brandon Meriweather pulled a pistol from his pants pocket and fired three times at the person, who jumped a fence and fled with another person in a car, police said. It was unclear if the assailant was hit.

Police said Meriweather used his gun legally.

Cooper and Meriweather told police they noticed a suspicious car parked outside their home near campus shortly after 6:30 a.m. When they went outside to investigate, a person crouched next to the house jumped up and shot Cooper.

The Miami athletic department released a statement saying it was cooperating with the police investigation.

"Until the investigation is complete, we will not have any additional comment," the statement said.

The house is owned by Hurricanes defensive backs coach Tim Walton and rented to players with approval from the school's compliance office.

Cooper, a junior, has played mostly on special teams for three years. He is listed as a second-team safety on the spring depth chart.

Meriweather is a standout safety for the Hurricanes.

I know who I am rooting for this year. Hopefully he had the gun legally. I dont know any Florida rules. I also heard on PTI today that the house is off campus, so there is no violation of the law of not having firearms on school property.

I read something about this earlier...

and it gets better. Seems like the Hurricanes head coach doesn't like his players to own firearms...

Coker tells Miami players no guns allowed on Hurricanes

PONTE VEDRA BEACH, Fla. — In the wake of a shooting incident last week near the Miami (Fla.) campus, Hurricanes coach Larry Coker said he plans to discourage players from owning handguns.

"I don't really want our players to have firearms. I'd rather they would dial 911 to come and handle those type of problems," Coker said at ACC Football Kickoff media days Monday.

Hurricanes reserve safety Willie Cooper was shot in the buttocks outside his home last Friday morning by an unknown person who fled after Cooper's roommate, safety Brandon Meriweather, the Hurricanes' leading tackler last season, returned gunfire. Police said Meriweather used his gun legally because he has a permit for the gun.

"Willie Cooper is fine," Coker said. "He had some superficial wounds and was out of the hospital that day. He worked out the next day."

Coker said he didn't know how much he could enforce a no-gun rule if players own guns legally off campus but said, "Now obviously on campus — you're out of school, you're done. But I really don't want our players to have firearms."

Coker also said he didn't know how many players had firearms and said it wasn't something he planned to find out. "I'm not going to take a head count on firearms, but I'll address it and discourage it, let's put it that way."

Florida State coach Bobby Bowden said he makes his players who own guns for hunting purposes register them with the coaching staff. "We keep 'em," Bowden said Monday. "If they go hunting, they check the guns out. Does that slip by sometime? I don't know. I don't keep up with it that much."

(My Comment: the next part is also interesting... Coker has a problem with his players legally owning a firearm, yet he is willing to allow a player with an extensive arrest record play on his team. From the little I've read, the player in question has at least one felony conviction and was also busted for violating probation).

Though Miami was selected by the media Monday as the preseason pick to win the ACC championship game, Coker spent the opening portion of his session answering questions about the shooting incident and about backup linebacker Willie Williams, who was allowed to enroll at Miami two years ago despite having 11 prior arrests. Unhappy with playing time, Williams asked for a release from his scholarship.

"As for right now, I think it's still a little bit up in the air," Coker said. He also said he would consider taking Williams back on the team even though he missed the Hurricanes' voluntary offseason workouts. Finally after a series of questions about Williams, Coker politely pleaded, "Willie Williams is not a factor, guys. He's not a factor. He's a third-team linebacker. Let's talk about the guys who are going to play."

Yup, better to dial 911 and Die!

If Meriweather hadn't fired back the coach would likely have had a funeral to go to!

This coach definitely has his head firmly planted up his ass.

He "makes" then register them and then keeps them? Does he keep all their cars and make them come to him whenever they want to drive somewhere, as well? What a clueless jerk. No, I take that back. Anybody who volunteers that they own firearms and them hand them over to him is an complete and utter idiot.

Maybe they have room searches, unannounced and strip searches too!

Dumb asses!

Well most College campuses are gun-free zones. I know that if I wasn't a bed-wetting liberal while I was in college, I'd have to check all my guns with public safty before entering campus.

There were rapes all the time (felt like at LEAST once a week) and what did they do? Gave the women whistles [rolleyes] .

Hey, as Liberal-Weer'd "Guns are too easy." because that's what we'd all prefer, that a criminal is tired out after murdering you. [rolleyes]
