Coast Guardsman Doing what Coast Guardsman Do

The Coast Guard on Thursday released video of service members jumping onto a moving drug smuggling vessel carrying 17,000 pounds of cocaine with an estimated street value of $232 million, according to a branch spokesman.

The video from June 18 showed crew members of the Cutter Munro leaping onto the self-propelled semi-submersible vessel, suspected of carrying drugs. The vessel moved alongside the cutter in the eastern Pacific. A crew member can then be seen busting open the hatch to find an unidentified man inside.

The guy in the sub knew it was a submersible, right?

Semi-submersible, which I’m guessing means that’s as deep as it goes.

I'm curious, what happens if they don't open up and surrender. Will the coast guard sink a boat that refuses to be boarded? Start strafing it with machine gun fire and watch it fill up with water?

I mean cudos to the dude, jumping onto a wet moving object to apprehend drug dealers is ballsy in any book.

But journalism as a whole now sucks. The person who wrote that easily couldve made a clickbait headline that was correct. Everyone knows those dont fully submerge

i am divided between if that is incredible bravery or foolishness. they could have just nudged the thing with the bow of their boat, and it would have taken on water...why risk this guy's life. if he fell overboard, the sub's prop would have got him, and all that gear would have drug him to the bottom

and who knows what booby traps the hatch had on it

i am all for our guys acting heroically if there is human life in jeopardy. but just some drugs....take the easy route guys!

Qualified yes. Sorry for the music. At 06:39 they show you how they deal with the water hazard the boat has become.

A burst of 50cal would’ve force the hatch open without jeopardizing the coastie’s life. I doubt the hull could withstand that. 20mm if 50cal doesn’t do the job.

When I was in the Navy I went to a few Coast Guard schools at Governor's Island, NY. Extremely interesting, good people. Most of my classmates were seasoned Coast Guard with a lot of boarding and seizure experience.

One of the guys related a story where they were chasing a fast boat, faster than they were. The captain asked him if he could put one across their bow. The seas were rough and the gun had to be manually cranked up and down to compensate for the boat's pitch. oops

    Totally agree.

And at minimum wear some knee protection. I can almost feel these metal pieces that protrude from the tower cracking my knees open.

Heard from my buddy who regularly patrolled off the coast of Columbia -
Boat detected at night, no lights, high rate of speed. Attempt to establish radio contact. If that fails, shoot until it stops.
Jumping onto the hatch of a submarine seems reckless for members of our Coast Guard to do

Well, cocaine is water soluble, so if you sink the boat there won't be any left for the coast guard's annual cocaine and hooker party.

You guys are funny. I've seen & done shit way worse than that trying to board shrimp boats in the Gulf of Mexico, scallopers in the Gulf of Maine, and clammers off the Jersey shore. He jumped on a stable platform in FAC waters. It's not like he did it with a 9 foot rolling sea in 30 knot winds.......

Maybe he has a life jacket on but it doesn't look like it in those photos. If he went overboard its straight to the bottom. I had a crazier time just getting back on board my sub off of the coast of Pattaya Beach Thailand with cargo nets over the side, 6 foot waves and a massive buzz on raging.

Dude, that thing is barely afloat under normal operation. Anything that hits that things hull is penetrating it. These are custom made for each run. They arent armored, they arent submarines and they are cheap and disposable.

The media keeps reporting these as submarines. They arent. At best they are semi submersible. I suspect that drug runners are using actual submarines and this certainly is not one of them.

Ah celebrating someone as a hero for doing something retarded while enforcing laws that shouldn't exist... This kind of propaganda is my favorite part of tyranny.

Scallopers were the worst. Yeah, port side’s better. Roll over the rail, plant both feet firmly on...the dredge on deck they neglected to mention. I learned to just expect to roll into the landing. I’ll take the bruises and chuckles over the broken ankles. “Oh yeah, meant to say starboard side, sorry guy”. SO glad to not be doing NE LMR anymore!

They have the newfangled TFSS - inflatable system that integrates with body armor that costs more than an entire cold weather PPE outfit. Those units have no bottom to their budget. It’s the fad mission nowadays, as they continue to phase out SAR.
