CMP Service grades back in stock

I've read the instructions, it's more a matter of getting it the last 3/8" without breaking something. I would believe a wooden mallet as mine is stubborn.

I had to do this for one of the new stocks I had. I pretty much couldn't close the trigger guard down, so I filed some of the wood away on the "A" surfaces in this guide. I didn't need to do anything with the "B" surfaces. I just kind of eyeballed it too, didn't go all out with the dowels/tape. I coated it with some tung oil afterwards, and you can't even tell it was modified.

i will note if you got it from the cmp and it closed it will close again....then after a year or so it will close even easier. The boyds wood is pretty soft as far as hardwood goes.

I probably could've closed it using a mallet, but I didn't really want to have to do that for however many times it would take until it loosened up. I didn't have to remove a ton of material, and it still is fairly tight locking up. It just made it so I can now close it by hand.

its all good.

Finally I'm getting around to an update.

I mailed in my order for a Service Grade on 8/17/17, received via USPS 8/21/17, processed on 8/31/17, and gloriously carresed by my hands on 9/7/17.

I was very fortunate to receive a 1954 H&R Receiver (I put in a sticky for an H&R), that appears to have been rebuilt by Springfield Armory in February of 1965 judging by the electro-penciling on the receiver leg.

I know you Milsurp Fiends want to take a gander...

Here's my literal first glimpse of my first M1... I apologize for potato quality, I was very excited after a long day of work.

I am VERY impressed with the Muzzle and Throat readings of my barrel, it's like brand new! I have yet to take a rod and patch to the barrel, but after a few drags of a boresnake, it looks FABULOUS.

I know it's tough to decipher, but it appears that the barrel was produced by Springfield Armory in 1965. I couldn't tell you what the rest of the symbols mean on the right.

The Bolt appears to have been produced by Springfield Armory in Oct/Nov of 1944, I find this to be VERY cool.

Here's the electropenciling on the receiver leg done by Springfield Armory in 2/65... I find it interesting why there is a different stamped serial number here than on the receiver tang that protrudes on the stock.... any explanations?

Here's 7 out of my 8 first shots out of the rifle, shot from a sitting benched position with only elbows on the benchtop. I need a lot more time shooting iron sighted rifle, but I was VERY impressed. Especially when I smacked the 200 yard gong at my range. I was using PPU M1 Garand Safe .30-06. I plan to reload for this gun in the very near future.

I'm still very quite new to the M1 Garand, and if anyone could tell me more about my rifle ( looking at you Mac1911 [laugh] ), that'd be much appreciated!

The stock looks dry to me, I've been thinking about giving it a few hand rubbed coats of BLO.

Furthermore, the rifle came extremely DRY from the CMP. It sounded like nails on a chalkboard when I cycled the action a few times. After a field stripping, a very light coat of oil for corrosion resistance, and a grease job with some Red 'n Tacky I had laying around, the action is incredibly SMOOTH now. The trigger group locks up very tight to the stock as well. Should be a great shooter!

Ive been slacking and still haven't greased/oiled mine. The mobile grease is popular I should probably pick some up. Has anybody tried the cherry balmz greases? I picked some up on a deal but still haven't got around to using it on anything I own.

I've got empty grease syringes at work... I should make up a bunch and spread the pound of M1 Red I bought for this purpose.

I'd sell it for a LOT cheaper this these guys!

Grease! Just spit on it!
I a small tub of grease that's got to be 40 years old. My dad just said. That ones for the guns. It's red and he told me one time it was water proof marine grease. Leftover from when we had a boat trailer.

Granted I haven't looked - but what's the best place to buy some empty grease syringes? The lid to my Mobil 1 Red Grease broke, so it just makes a mess of a ziplock bag (and my hands/fingers when I go to get some). Wouldn't mind filling it into syringes.

So I’m an M1 and a CMP noob but I just received my service grade and it seems to be in great condition. Are these good to shoot out of the box or should i strip down clean and lube?

Edit: NVM sometimes reading works lol

You could just do what I did and hand it to an expert Garand armorer and beg him to take your money. [rofl]
Wasn't too expensive, my new M1 will easily outshoot me.

This looks to be a pretty good deal:

Also an option:

Evidently, the jello shot crowd uses them doo. This is a great price for the quantity:

Life keeps getting in the way. I showed up, at about 09:55. I was going to spend some time with the garand at 100 yards but got tired waiting for the line to go cold.
Rain tomorrow... I'll probably be out Sunday morning.

if you're near Worcester i'll offer the same as I offered for the last few guys here...if you wanna bring it over some night next week after work we'll get it stripped down to the basics and clean it in the parts washer...then peen the barrel if it needs it, slap some grease on it and get it ready to shoot!

bring beer like the last guy and i'll even teach you how to do it right! :D
