METHUEN — An on-duty police officer has been providing security at City Council meetings lately, which has Councilor Stephen Zanni asking why.
Zanni said the officer's time would be better spent patrolling the streets.
"I'm sure he's bored here, standing around with nothing to do," Zanni said.
Police have sent one on-duty beat cop to the last few meetings, after Councilor Jeanne Pappalardo asked Mayor William Manzi if the police could send an officer.
Pappalardo made the request after she heard about a February shooting in Kirkwood, Mo., in which a gunman stormed into a council meeting and shot and killed two councilors, two police officers and the public works director. The gunman also severely wounded the mayor, before being shot and killed by police. There was a police officer guarding that meeting, and the gunman killed him, according to news reports.
