Washington (CNN)New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie on Wednesday pardoned a Marine sergeant with New Hampshire ties over a gun charge.

Sgt. Joshua Velez, a Massachusetts resident who works as recruiter in New England -- including in the first-in-the-nation primary state -- was arrested over Labor Day weekend after a traffic stop in the Garden State turned up an unloaded handgun in his vehicle's glove compartment.

Nicole Sizemore, Christie's deputy press secretary, said Velez is licensed to carry the handgun in Massachusetts, but was charged in New Jersey with unlawful possession of a handgun and hollow point bullets.

Following a written application from Velez for a pardon over the criminal charges, Christie -- a Republican presidential candidate -- granted it. Christie this year has granted several pardons to non-New Jersey residents caught with weapons in violations of the Garden State's strict gun laws.

The case has potential political overtones. Christie has faced criticism from gun rights groups -- an important Republican primary constituency -- for his support more than 20 years ago of a federal assault weapons ban. That's a position Christie says he no longer holds.

Speaking on CNN's "State of the Union" in August, Christie pointed to his vetoes of several proposed firearms regulations in New Jersey, including an I.D. card for gun owners.

On Monday, the governor's office announced Christie's support of a set of recommendations it said would "protect lawful individuals' right to firearms for self-defense and protection."

New Hampshire is a make-or-break state for Christie. He's camped out there for months, ahead of the Feb. 9 primary. A recent CNN/WMUR poll showed Christie in third place in the Granite State among likely primary voters.

That's not the only good news out of NJ:

New Jersey Gun Charge Dropped Against Pennsylvania Guard

A prosecutor in New Jersey has dropped a felony gun charge against a Pennsylvania corrections officer, noting that officers only learned that the guard had a gun in his car because he was the victim of a drunken driving crash.

Gloucester County Prosecutor Sean Dalton said Monday that the charge against Raymond Hughes of carrying a weapon without a state permit was inappropriate.

Hughes had a Pennsylvania carry permit, but it wasn't recognized by New Jersey's strict gun laws. He faced a minimum of 3 ½ years in prison if he was found guilty.

It wasn't a pardon from Christie, but it's likely he used some persuasion to get the DA to drop the charges.

when he leads the charge to allow reciprocity with all other states...then I will be impressed.

Probably not anymore?

Now that Christie is out of the race for POTUS, it will be interesting to see if he continues this stance on 2A?

I guess if he does plan on making another run for the WH after he done as Governor in 2018, he might?

The statist has always held police and .mil in higher regards then the common serfs. This is not news.

Like I'm ever going to believe a governor that vetoed anti-gun legislation as he said during one of the earlier debates, but didn't mention that it was his own anti-gun legislation that he proposed.

During Thursday’s Republican presidential debate, Chris Christiecited his veto of a proposed gun ban to bolster his conservative bonafides… while leaving off the inconvenient fact that he was the one who proposed the ban to begin with.

Yeah, I was going to say: they didn't send him to some sort mandatory re-education training like Shaneen Allen?

Governor Christie Embraces Reforms To Protect Lawful Individuals’ Right To Firearms For Self-Defense And Protection

Monday, December 21, 2015
State of New Jersey
Office of the Governor
Trenton, NJ - Building on his strong commitment to ensure a fair and sensible application of New Jersey’s gun laws in a manner that respects law-abiding New Jerseyans’ constitutional right to possess firearms for self-defense, Governor Christie today announced the release of the report of the New Jersey Firearm Purchase and Permitting Study Commission, and stated his full support of its recommendations to bring clarity and commonsense to New Jersey’s gun control laws and regulations.

The scope of the Study Commission’s work and its recommended reforms include the following ill-defined and confusing areas of law:

  • Changes to expand the “justifiable need” standard for the issuance of firearm carry permits.
  • Clearer guidance for the transport of lawfully-owned firearms.
  • Bringing fairness and uniformity to the processing of firearms applications.

Until I can carry hollow points in NJ on my Mass LTC, it's all ragtime.

His actions aren't a measure of his beliefs until he's out of the race for VPOTUS.
