I took a handgun and ammo with me on my trip to Alaska this month. For all you nervous nellies, it was a total non-event.

When I declared my unloaded firearm at Logan, the Alaska Air agent gave me the declaration form to sign. I then put the form inside my luggage and locked it. She then put the bag on her conveyor and off it went. I collected the bag without incident in Anchorage.

On my return trip at Anchorage, the agent had me fill out the form, put it in my bag, and take the bag over to the tsa oversized bag area. The tsa agent verified that I had the form in my bag, that my inner hardcase was locked, and did an explosives screening. Then he had me lock up my bag. I collected it at Logan without incident.

The airline agents and the tsa agent were all very professional and as pleasant as could be.

No, I don't have one. I do have a 44 mag, but no holster for it. So I took my Delta Elite. I got some Buffalo Bore ammo - 220gr at 1175 fps. Still not a hot 44 mag, but better than my fists.

My brother and I went moose hunting in Canada. We flew Air Canada and had no problem with the firearms. The TSA people new the rules well enough, but, it was still Boston. After looking at the two bolt action high power rifles he asked if we were going duck hunting. I thought there might be hope for them right up until then.[thinking]

Logan is probably the best airport for flying with firearms that I've experienced.

About 13 years ago, when I was in Anchorage flying to Homer, the airline agent asked us if we had any firearms in our checked luggage. She was surprised and puzzled when we said no. I almost expected her to say "well, Ok, we can fix that." [laugh]

So I might vote for Anchorage or maybe Fairbanks.

I flew Jetblue to Texas with my shotgun last weekend and it was a breeze. I did, however, have some beef with their policy on ammo (I left all mine at home because of it:)

Ammunition for the firearm cannot be placed in the same container as the firearm, but may be in the same checked bag as long as everything is packaged properly. Ammunition must be housed in a separate container that is completely separate and distinct from the firearms locked box. The ammunition must be packaged in a fiber (such as cardboard), wood or metal box specifically designed for carrying small amounts of ammunition. Ammunition is limited to 10 pounds per customer. Ammunition will not be permitted in carry-on or checked baggage on international flights.

So I can't put shotgun shells in the same hard sided case as the gun, but I could put the hard sided case and a box of shells in a duffel bag and check that? Do I have that right?

Flew Continental with my pistol earlier this summer and 10 lbs of ammo in a Pelican case, they didn't mind at all.

That policy is typical. I put my handgun in locking S&W performance center box. Then I put that box and ammo in a hard-sided suitcase. Not a big deal.

You should have thanked him for the complement. He obviously thought you were a great shot. [smile]

It ranks up there, certainly But Atlanta, Dayton, and Omaha are better IMO. All are class acts. I've never experienced any problems.

When I fly with firearms, usually I have a big pelican case stuffed with 3 rifles and 10 - 20 mags. The only reaction I've ever gotten was from the TSA guys in Dayton when they ran it through the x-ray in front of me and that was a high-five followed by "****ing awesome."

Just back from a match in New Orleans.
Went to Logan JetBlue, went to the counter and said I had a firearm to declare. Filled out the tag locked up the pistols and that was it. Same on the way home from New Orleans. Absolutly no problems.

I remember flying with a rifle into the old Denver airport (Stapleton) many years ago to go antelope hunting. I think deer and elk may also have been in season at the time. There were so many gun cases stacked up over to the side of the luggage area that it took me a while to find mine. I'll echo the experience of others at Logan - have flown out with firearms several times with never a hitch.
