You know its a sad day in this country when we are willing to sacrifice such a historical sanctuary such as Gettysburg battlefield to the forces of pure greed. To help fight this abomination, you can visit the following site:

http://www.nocasinogettysburg.com/pages/1/index.htm

Also, you can visit the Civil War Preservation Trust (CWPT) which is taking up this noble cause (I am a member of it). You can join the CWPT at:

http://www.civilwar.org/

Please, I urge everyone to please help, this starving college student can only donate so much [lol] Thanks!

That's still going on? I thought they'd defeated that, we were down there two years ago and I thought I'd heard it wasn't going to happen. Idiots.

No - they started talking about it and planning for it again this year. The CW org that I'm part of is doing their best to fight it. One can only hope.

Historical....are you part of a reenacting group? Besides the CWPT that is?

I'll be really upset, if they put it in the tavern with my ancestor's picture on the wall. My son went down there years ago with his Guard unit, and the tavern saw his name plate on his uniform, and wouldn't let him pay for his meal. Seems we're related to a General Farnsworth that died there.

Well I am saddened, but what can one expect today ?

Along similar lines historical reenactment places such as Sturbridge Village and Plimoth Plantation have had serious declines in visitors for about the past ten years. Probably more people go to Busch Gardens and do Williamsburg (if at all) as a side trip.

I know I sound like what I am: an old fart, but in many ways I am glad that 2/3rds of my life is behind me, simply because I don't really like The Brave New World that is America ,or is that Amerika ?

ruefully,

Mark

Yea, I do civil war reenactments with the 20th Mass. Volunteer Infantry (www.20thmass.org). How about you Lynne?

I think that my wife would kill me if I started another hobby. I have people at my club that do the black powder, and they do those things where they stay for a week or so. Crap, I can't remember what they call it. But I guess that there are hundreds upon hundreds of those white canvas tents...all black powder shooters.

Anyway, more money in clothing and supplies. Would freak out my wife...though I think that I could get her to do this before I can get her shooting. LOL! We might have to talk off-line...

Know, I don't know that much about Civil War History...

Anyway, here's a pic of us.

My brother is HEAVY into the Mountain Man Rendezvous scene. Sounds just like what you describe above.

I think the reenactment groups are great, and I really enjoy seeing Civil War and Revolutionary War reenactments performed. I went to militia day at Old Sturbridge Village last summer (2004) and had a great time.

However, having worn the uniform for real for so long, I don't think I want to reenlist :) But I sure think it is a great hobby and all the folks that I have talked to who are in to it seem very nice.

That's it. The Rendezvous. They have orniments or badges that they turned into orniments for many many years going back.

In that picture above, it's the guy all the way to the right (looking at the picture) in the white shirt and red suspenders.

He's also one amazing black powder rifle maker. I think he said that they will go for a few thousand dollars with all the work he puts into them. I know that the ones that him and his wife use are a couple of butes. And really accurate. I've seen him take the head off a match with his black powder rifle. He keeps trying to get me into it...but I just keep thinking about how much more money it would cost... [shock]

Then I think about how much fun it might be... :D

I heard that Traitor Joe [lol] might not be commanding the liberty greys this coming season, is this rumor true?
