I am assembling my first AR. As I was putting in the front dentent and detent spring on the take down, the spring slipped and propelled the detent across the room. I can't find it. That is the only part that I need to finish my build. If anyone has an extra detent and could hook me up, I would really appreciate it,

Thanks,

Garrett

I wish I had one for you Garrett...it sucks when I do stuff like that...sucks bad. You'll get frustrated enough come about 2 in the morning when you'll go back to the scene with a flashlight and you'll find it...I've done that many times...you KNOW it has to be there as it won't just disappear into thin air...you look hard enough, you'll find it...or you could hit up the Concord Gun show this weekend and there are sure to be some in someone's junk box.

yeh, whenever i take something apart, or re-assemble something, i make sure the cats are watching me.... of something drops or flies across the room, they're usually right there to point it out....

Great idea! But IMHO, still not a good enough reason to own cats...[wink]

Haha! I knew you could do it...it's the ol' "dammit, I KNOW it's here somewhere" routine.

Do what I did when the same thing happened to me. First swear for half an hour, then in anger say you'd give ten bucks to have it back. The 14 year old found it in 5 minutes. Who else has a ten dollar detent pin?

How to not lose small parts when assembling guns and stuff:

1. Steal a couple gallon (or larger) size ziplock freezer bags from your wife / mom / whatever.
2. Insert parts into ziplock bag
3. Insert hands into bag
4. Pick up parts in bag with hands in bag
5. Assemble parts in bag
6. Remove assembly from bag

If (when) you launch a spring or detent or whatever, chances are the ziplock bag will contain it so you don't have to do the armorer's low crawl. [wink]

Now just imagine if it flew into your eye and not across the room. Though I rarely wear mine, this should be a reminder that we should all be wearing eye protection even when doing minor work on our guns.

[laugh] when this happened to me i ordered a bunch of spares. they got here pretty quick from Midway but now i keep spares of all them small parts. same with 1911 screws, glock parts ect.

I don't bother with the forward detent. I find it easier to use a take down pin with a built in detent.

UPDATE:

As previously mentioned, I found the detent and completed the build. I took the rifle to the range to sight it in. My first mistake was taking reloads instead of factory ammo. My reloades were somehow a tad out of spec and as a result I could not get the bolt to go into battery. It was a major PITA to get the BCG out. A club member (MIddleboro Sportsmens Club - great guys) helped me out. He was able to see right away that it was an ammo issue and not a problem with the rifle. We culled out a few good ones and I was able to shot about 9 rounds before I had to leave. I think that I am going to buy chamber case gauge and check all of my reloads. I see a bullet puller in my future. . .
