Buying from Somone who's LTC has expired

Can you do it if you go to your dealer and do all the transfer work without getting that person into some form of trouble ?

I was able to buy and transfer a gun from a friend with an expired LTC at a local gun shop no problems for anyone. I did the transporting of the gun from their house to the shop we filled out the paperwork they saw her long expired in 1992 LTC shop commented on it being a paper laminated LTC asked for the transfer fee and out the door we went.
