I didn't want to muck up the ammo mega thread with this and didn't see anything about it when I searched so here goes. I bought some ammo at Walmart yesterday and I usually do about every 2 weeks or so when they have what I am looking for and besides the staff being idiots I experienced something different yesterday. After the kid studied my LTC for 5 mins, appearing to not know what he was looking for we go over to the register. I had 2 boxes of 9mm, 5 boxes of .223, a box of .22's, and a box of 12ga home defense rounds. So he starts ringing stuff up and after the sirens and blinking lights stopped after the first box he asked if the ammo was for a handgun, I said yes. He does the next box and same thing this happened for every box including the 12ga. which he also wanted to know if it was for a handgun which I said yes to. He said he needed to put it in the computer what it was being used for. Has anyone else experienced this? Not a big deal, just the shear stupidity of these people still astounds me. I don't know why but it does. They are worried about what type of weapon its being used in when half the time they don't ask for your LTC or FID, and what the hell does it matter what you are shooting it out of.

yes, I have experienced something similar while buying ammo in NY state at wallmart. I think for pistol ammo, they need to see an LTC - for long gun ammo they do not - I think its a store policy thing. Sounds like the kid behind the counter had no idea what ammo was or what kind of gun its used in. meh.

They asked me at the Walmart in Orange, MA but not at the Walmart in Leominster. The guy at Walmart in Leo was very familiar with the ammo case so that could have something to do with it.

I'll never forget the tramlaw employee who kept looking at my LTC every time the register prompted him to- as though it would change in the 5 seconds between when it last prompted him. [laugh]

Bellingham, Plymouth, Walpole....I never experienced the problem you described. You could have gotten a trainee. The guy
in Bellingham is pretty squared away. Real Johnny on the spot. Ditto for Plymouth. YMMV

I was at the one in Northbridge, thats where I usually go and that was the first time I had been asked what type of weapon they were being used in. I know the register alarms after each scan which in itself is stupid. You would think after the first time it wouldn't repeat on every other box but whatever. I just don't see why it matters what its being used in but for that matter most things having to do with fire arms don't make sense in this state.

The one time I bought ammo at wallmart they asked to see my LTC in the sporting goods department before opening the case.Tthen told me they'd escort me to the front registers and cash me out. At the front register they asked to see my LTC again. No biggy but thought it was funny a woman behind me in line looked at the ammo i was buying (not much 1 box of 9mm and 2 boxes of .22) and said " I wouldnt want to live next door to you" I just smiled and the clerk replied for me "Why? he's probably got the safest house on the block." [smile] its funny cuz its true.

You need to be 21 to purchase handgun ammo so the register prompts them to ask and displays something on their screen that says to verify age. When I buy 22's and they ask if it's for a handgun I'll reply "some of it is" which usually gets me a confused stare.

Picked up a bunch of ammo (restocking in advance of Gunpowder pig), a lodge frying pan, a pizza, and a half gallon of insecticide at the Wal-Mart in Nashua last week, just before midnight.

The "birthday" prompt popped up on the readout for about a tenth of a second, cashier immediately hits okay, I pay cash, walk out. No ID, no questions, no sales tax.

I have been asked at the Hudson NH Walmart.
However, one of the cashiers that I had told me "Just say 'No' or it will ask me for every box that I ring up"

I was asked one time when buying 12 ga slugs if it was for a rifle or handgun. I was like neither and the guy just stared at me with a blank look on his face for a good 15 seconds then finally bagged the ammo. At another Walmart I was buying .22 ammo and the guy asked for my FID I gave it to him. He looks at it for a good 2 minutes then asked for drivers license. He kept looking at them back and forth for another minute then said "your all set"

When i go they just check my LTC before they open the case which usually takes about 20 minutes and asking 5 times to get someone over there but i love getting the double take cause the picture on my LTC has a full beard and i shave it over the summer.... good times buying ammo at walmart from the people that dont know any better

Well, you're not a cop so how can the sheeple expect you to be safe!
Hope you were wearing you're CCW sash.

Most of the people that work at Wally World in my area are terrified of ammo. They handle it like it's nitroglycerin. I always pick up and give each box they ever so gently lay on the counter like I'm Ralphie from A Christmas story shaking the tube of BB's. Their eyes boggle.
...It's the little things you can do to brighten up you're day.

Never been asked what it's for tho. Now they don't even sell ammo as of the past few months.

Seems like it's soo much more $ at the LGS even tho it's only a few bucks...

It's a lot more at the local gun shops because with a few narrow exceptions, the local gun shops basically get raped and abused by the mid level distributors. The distribution models for most of the ammunition in this country sucks. WalMart is the only one with enough buying power to bypass the "cartel" in the middle. (There are a few mid levels that sell direct
to consumers, but they're the exception rather than the rule).

there is an issue potentially with selling handgun ammo to someone under 21. Makes no sense to me, as their are rifles that use pistol loads.

In Ware, they'll take a look at my LTC before opening the case, then ask the "is this for a handgun?" question when prompted by the register.

And then there's the LGS up in NH where people have reported finding ammo on the shelves with the old Walmart price sticker (several bucks cheaper) still attached.

I was asked if the .22 long rifle I was buying was for a hand gun or long gun in Ware walmart.

Before I could say hand gun the women said "Duh it says long rifle right on the box". So I said a really long rifle and she just smiled.
