Belmont's licensing officer is Making The World Safe From Democracy, or at least trying to. He is planning to require:

1. Safety courses AND practical fire tests for ALL applicants, INCLUDING renewals. Note that state law pre-empts this.

2. "Letters of Recommendation." Note that the state-created and only authorized application requires only 2 references; NO "letters of recommendation."

3. Membership in a gun club. Note that this requirement, imposed by the Randolph PD, was STRUCK DOWN by the Quincy District Court.

It seems Belmont seeks to ape Brookline, Newton and Boston in intimidation, obstruction and harassment in the name of "public safety."

Belmont residents are so warned.[/b]

I just moved to Melrose this weekend. It's still listed as a green town on packing.org. My friend has an ALP here. I'm going to go down to the station on my next day off and see about reapplying to getting the S&T taken off. Seems like I should do it really soon before the disease of stupid gun laws spreads over here.

This all has nothing to do with "safety" or "trustworthiness"! It is all about intimidation and control! They are doing what they can to intimidate people NOT to apply for a LTC!

I've been told by many people that they had FID or LTC prior to 10/98, but were so intimidated by the news stories on "the new requirements" and rumors of some chiefs to be hard-ass and requiring all sorts of stuff (most mention "having to take a course") that they never even bothered to get a current permit and are now allegedly in illegal possession of firearms . . . that they can't shoot or bring anywhere (none of these folks ever "carried").

Short of paying an attorney to face off with the chief, the majority avoid the conflicts and just comply with the insane requirements or don't bother to get a LTC/FID! Thus, the chiefs crow that they are succeeding in meeting their goals (of no permits or few to the politically connected only).

I'd rather spend my hard-earned money on guns, ammo, and classes rather than lawyers.

I wonder if there's a way we could get a class-action lawsuit to be done so that multiple wronged citizens could get jusitce.
