I am trying to learn and ID more waterfowl that I see.

This morning I saw 5-6 Buffleheads on a pond in Westboro. Book says their range is typcally more to the north west passing through northeast when migrating.
But not typcally in new england.

Was this a rare sighting or were these guys just a little bit off course?

I didn't think my first post would be waterfowl related, but they're pretty common along the coast from late fall into spring.

Saw a ton Saturday morning off Nahant kayak fishing.

Ducks do weird things not always by the book. I saw a pair of Pintails in Ipswich at a farm in February.

That book needs to be updated. Those things are all over the RI/MA seacoast and I've seen a ton of them on big rivers in NH. So, they're not uncommon at all. What book are you reading? Is that a peterson guide? Pretty disappointing if it is.

Just checked my Peterson guide. Doesn't say anything about them being rare. Shows their winter range all over the costal and inland areas of New England. Pick up one of those books and throw yours in the trash.
