Breaking: FLIR Discontinues All Civilian Sales

Definitely needed for the vehicle roof for that "Civilian Tactical" look, in high-stakes environments !

NES Group Buy before they run out? [rofl]

Ordering my IFF patches, with overnight shipping for Monday...
I was thinking of having a custom patch made up: "CASH REWARD IF NOT SHOT!"

UPDATE:

LOL *cough* *cough* bullshit *cough *cough*

Does the person who wrote that article know the military doesn't need to "jam" their own satellites? They can actually just send a message to the satellites to tell them to turn off when over certain areas, then turn back on when they have exited that area. Although... now that I think of it, I'm not sure how they would do that for the WAAS satellites since they are in geosynchronous orbit. So, maybe those could be jammed.

The alleged LE seizures in your alleged "source" cite something called "imminent domain," which doesn't exist.

Eminent domain does, but it has nothing to do with seizing NODs.

Your "source" is, at best, inaccurate in a way that makes me question the "journalists'" literacy. At worst, it's a soiled shitrag of a biased paranoid publication catering to the lowest troglodyte readers among us.

You decide. Either way, I don't buy that the FBI is ganking NODs because some carrier strike group is jamming GPS. Allegedly.[tinfoil]
What an absolute crock of shit.
I don't think a Carrier group jamming GPS has anything to do with premium civilian NV tech being basically confiscated by the FBI are related, but I don't doubt that the FBI is taking the NV devices because they are a gov't agency and can do what they want until you sue them and a court deems their actions illegal.

I mean, it's not like the FBI hasn't gotten away with murder before and it's not like police are now justified to use lethal force in Oklahoma against people who are confused with orders given to them by police.

Some good reading to show just how much these gov agencies actually care about you and your stuff...

So I’m not confirming or denying this is real

I spoke to someone in the know, seems like the CEO is a hunter. The person I know seemed surprised.

As such I’ll wait and see.

Nobody said they were not complimentary

My comment revolves around how prevelent their use are.....specifically not.........they're heavy, very expensive and even the army has stated they are only going to deploy/issue to a limited % of people that are issues NODs

PVS-14 weighs in at 12oz........PSQ-20's are nearly three times the weight at 2lbs.......thats a shit ton of weight to dangle off a helmet of all places.....folks are carrying more kit than our soldiers have ever carried before as it stands already

If something were a novelty, it wouldn't be a very good compliment, would it? Bottom line, thermals have been, and still are, used frequently by the military. I've had quite a few hours behind both SWIR and LWIR optics in combat. LWIR/thermals are absolutely not a novelty.

I'm pissed because I was waiting for the PTS233 to come down a little in price, figured some new heat would be released at SHOT.

Also, you guys yanking it to that doom porn about the feds confiscating NODs, word on the street is one small shop got busted retooling stolen .gov tubes and selling them on the grey market.

Its not like FLIR is the only manufacturer.

Lupold makes some decent thermal equipment, as well as a handful of other manufacturers. I've done a side by side hunting comparison between a FLIR scout and the Leupold LTO Quest and I liked the quest better. While the FLIR had a slightly better framerate the monocular was cumbersome to use in the woods.

I called all the US phone numbers for FLIR.

They claim to know nothing about any discontinuation of civilian sales.

UPDATE:

I just called here:

These guys are the best dealers for civilians and are at all the East Coast gun shows.

Bad News...

FLIR will discontinue all rifle scopes to civilians.

You can still get thermal handhelds but not on a rifle scope.

There still are other companies that make thermal rifle scopes and are sold here:

I wonder if it is just part of a larger plan to keep the technology out of the hands of peasants.
Hate to be tinfoily (not really lol) but gun control at the state level has picked up the pace, major corporations have stopped selling rifles and ammo to the public, fed gov has been spending like someone who has zero intentions of paying their bill's and the latest is FLIR stopping nv rifle scope sales to civilians. Hairs on the back of my neck arent quite standing up yet but they're thinking about it.

LWIR (thermals) has limitations, but it also has massive benefits and it’s absolutely incorrect that the military doesn’t use it and won’t continue using it. It’s not a replacement for SWIR (night vision), it’s a compliment. In fact, the next thing is using both LWIR and SWIR together to provide one fused image. Although it will also continue to be used by itself for certain tasks.
Uncooled thermal is pretty much a toy when you compare it to even a crappy cryo MWIR
SWIR is very good in defined conditions and gets very interesting when looking at polarimetric imaging.
None of the really interesting stuff is affordable - And all of the affordable stuff is uninteresting once you have played with the real stuff.

as for flir/thermal imaging its a novelty.......its got lots of limitations

doesnt "see" thru a pane of glass for example so you cant "drive" a car with it.....it just presents a solid pane of glass

there are all sorts of other challenges.

There's a reason why .mil is still using gen 3 ir stuff....just moving to WP from green
Kind of hard to change all of your training doctrine around NODS, too big of an investment. Thermal is a good supplimental tech as it can see in complete darkness and identify targets easier in many situations. They are really complimentary technologies i think. Ill bet a lot of spec ops people have pocket thermal sights to go along with their NOD gear.

This is very interesting news, and could turn the market against FLIR.

[rofl] This is the dumbest f**king line. Yeah, when you take yourself out of the market it tends to have this effect.

Depends on size dont you think?

We're talking about a sizeable mass in some cases that is not vascular
Not going to see the difference on a microbolometer based FPA - skin temp would vary but only a few tens of millidegrees.
A cryocooled MWIR - a good one is amazing 😁
Another fun thing is that most commercial textile dies are completely transparent in SWIR
