Box of 45-70

I'm not very familiar with 45-70, is it always crimped so tightly?

I am trying to figure it out. New to the round and have yet to have a chance to really play with it for accuracy. Will find out this weekend. I only have it crimped so the brass is flush with the bullet at the cannelure. I figured since there is a bit of recoil and the cartridges are stacked one in front of the other, better to be a bit more than less. Someone that actually knows what they are doing can probably chime in with some better advice. Pete

You probably don’t need that heavy of a crimp but it doesn’t hurt.
The big worry with over crimping cast bullets is undersizing the bullet. These bullets are so long and probably have a decent crimp groove to roll into. Even if you over crimp in that small area you still have like 1” of good bullet below that. You’re fine.

Depends. I dont crimp mine when I load for the Sharps. I can pull the bullets out with my fingers.

But I would never shoot my loads in a lever action, that will need a crimp.
