Boston Dynamics' creepy robot dog is going up for sale

Videos of Boston Dynamics' robots have been the stuff of both awe and inspiration, as well as nightmares. Now, it appears the robots will be doing more than just performing parkour or dancing around on YouTube.

    They're going up for sale.

According to The Verge, who interviewed Boston Dynamics’ CEO Marc Raibert at Amazon's Re:MARS conference in Las Vegas, Spot, the company's dog-like robot and arguably its cutest machine, will be available for purchase "within months" and certainly before the end of 2019.

We’re just doing some final tweaks to the design,” Raibert said in the interview. “We’ve been testing them relentlessly.

He will probably partner with Boston Dynamics to include an Alexa app. The dog can run to the Amazon grocery store and bring you back a six pack, some hot dogs, and a bag of Cheetos.

I want one of these dogs.

The battery only lasts 90 minutes though.

I bet they are expensive, though.

Imagine people saw that thing patrolling your property. You could store your valuables on the porch.

    But yeah, don't want.

Put a tray on its back that holds your beer so it can follow you around at parties?

The first time I saw the robotic dog and every time after I wonder why these can’t be the sentries in a school that could be the first responders to gunshots......

You would trust a machine to decide who to shoot?
Or are you just talking about a walking camera? Way cheaper to just put in more cameras.
Imagine one of these with a firearm. Then a shooter need only hack in from overseas.

There's already an open source version

I wouldn’t arm them with a gun but use them as you would a real guard dog, to confine, to attack, to provide information on location, etc

Armed or not, I'm not trusting a machine to make that call. Even a real dog isn't given this, they have a handler right there with them. If you are going to use them as just a remote control thing, you've spend a lot of money for something that still required a person, and is less agile and more expensive than a real dog.

Machines are still only good for repetitive, predictable tasks. Walking around a construction site with a camera, sure. But this only makes sense because you can't put in cameras until later and all it's doing is providing a mobile camera platform.

If you give it offensive or defensive capabilities you either need it to make life/death decisions, which machines aren't good at, or it's remotely controlled, in which case it will get hacked.

I have no idea, they'll probably sell only a handful of them.

To be fair to Ken, that is apparently not exactly what he meant.

I want to program it to go down range and hang and retrive targets. Those things seem to be getting father away as i get older.

Wait maybe I could put a clay pigeon thrower on it for skeet and sporting clays
    This thing is sounding better
