Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg, who has reached across state and party lines to support candidates who agree with his policies, is scheduled to appear in Northern Virginia on Thursday afternoon to endorse State Senator Jeannemarie Devolites Davis, a moderate Republican who is facing a tough fight for re-election.

Ms. Davis, 51, represents Fairfax County, an affluent Washington suburb that has been increasingly trending Democratic. Her husband is Representative Thomas M. Davis III, also a moderate Republican from Fairfax County, who recently decided not to run for the United States Senate that is being vacated by Senator John W. Warner, who is retiring.

Ms. Davis was elected to the Virginia House of Delegates in 1997 and to the Virginia Senate in 2003. She is seeking a second term but faces a strong challenge from J. Chapman Petersen, a Democrat who is a former state delegate and a member of the Fairfax City Council.

Ms. Davis’s district is so heavily Democratic now that every voting precinct favored Jim Webb, the Democrat, in a close-fought Senate race last year. The incumbent, Senator George Allen, a Republican, was narrowly defeated.

A news release from Ms. Davis’s office emphasized her “independent and courage, in particular her steadfast support of legislation to keep guns out of the hands of criminals.” Ms. David has supported measures to require criminal background checks for purchasers at gun shows and allow local governments to ban firearms at public schools and libraries. She also voted against a measure to outlaw the controversial sting operations New York City has conducted to catch out-of-state gun dealers who agree to so-called straw purchases, in which people ineligible to obtain firearms use proxies to fill out the paperwork.

Mr. Bloomberg, who left the Republican Party and declared himself an independent in June, last year successfully supported several candidates for federal office, including Senator Joseph I. Lieberman of Connecticut, a Democrat-turned-independent who fended off a challenge from Ned Lamont, the Democratic nominee, and Claire C. McCaskill, a Missouri Democrat who defeated an incumbent Republican senator, Jim Talent.

A gun control Republican? What the hell is that?

What is it with guys like Guliani and Bloomberg being in the Republican party. These two asshats are liberal/socialist/Democrats and yet they call themselves Republicans and are embraced by the party. Just one more indication that the Democrats are taking over the Republicans in my opinion.

The current President, the presidntial candidates that have a snowballs chance in hell of winning the general election, about 85% of the elected officials in the fedral government that call themselves republicans.

In short, par for the course.

Mark my words. The Republican party will split itself in two. Unfortunately not in the way we want. You'll have a second Democrat party on one side, and moonbat neocon/social conservatives on the other. Everyone else (sane people) will be walking around thinking WTF!??!?

I have also been thinking that the Republicans will split - I don't think they will necessarily split along the lines that you thinking of though - I think there might be a more libertarian i.e: fiscally very conservative, totally against big govt., but pretty socially liberal - in that they think the govt has no place legislating what society should be like. And they would be completely pro 2nd amendment. If multiple parties spun out of this debacle some of them would also draw away people from the Democrats. The Ron Paul campaign is already doing this - they actively promote having Democrats register as Republicans to vote for RP. Although Ron Paul might turn out to be only a symptom of the crack up of our existing 2 party system - I personally will vote for him if for no other reason than to drive the wedge deeper. Again - my personal opinion - but the 2 party system has been failing - it is time to try a new tack if we want to get our freedoms back.

On FOX news, during Rudys interview - he referenced Bloombery as Mike.. If their Friends.. and Rudy would happen to get elected.. I would be worried about new Bans being put in place.. After all Rudy cleaned up NY - so he says.
