Big Happening at the Skeet Field Today

Lots of things can go wrong. For a while, we had a run of factory shells that would have the metal base separate from the plastic tube, and leave the tube in the bore. Persons with pumps and autos (like me) had to be extra-vigilant to make sure that the whole thing came out. It happened often enough that one of the members fashioned a tool to pull the plastic sleeves out. Scary part was that aside from leaving a partially obstructed bore, there was no difference from a good shell: same bang, same recoil, same broken target.

We never had a second shot fired on a partially obstructed bore, but were Skeeters to be using an auto or pump, it could have become scary.

When he was a kid, my son was shooting doubles with a pump at the State shoot (88/100) and part way through the round, he called pull, and the first round was a squib. He had awesome situational awareness. He lowered the gun, cleared it, removed the barrel, used the Technical Stick, removed the wad (important, as if the wad had exited the barrel, he would have had a Lost bird), and went back to work.

Gotta pay attention at all times.
