Best AK in 5.56 For The Non Poors

Poland has been using the 5.56 beryl for 27 years
He was talking about the Norinco 84S specifically. There are police forces and some military in parts of Africa that have used the Norinco 84s. They were originally created for the USA market but built in the military factories along side the 56s in China.

I have to second the 5.45 suggestion, unless you are dead set on 5.56. The ballistics are functionally equal with an equal barrel in terms of standard loads. Terminal ballistics heavily favor 5.45 when talking about 7N6. FMJ to FMJ is similar. Reloads are case by case - literally.

As far as a suggestion, since you said no Galil, I would have to say FB Radom Beryl if you are going 5.56 AK.

Nailed it. The best AK in 5.56 is the Galil ACE Gen 1 RnL. If that doesn't count as an AK to you than the next best is the Beryl. I love my 5.45 ACE Gen 1 and Beryl.

As much as I like X95, I don't like Galil ACE. Also, can't flex on poors with Galil.
Sure you can. Galils are not cheap. The ACE gen 1 pistol out of the box is $1700, but get it converted by Dissident Arms and it’s like $3k. This has the KNS plastic delete with KNS galil style grip, KNS adjustable gas piston, ALG 2 stage 4lb trigger, JMAC customs skeleton stock and pic adapter, and RS Regulate10 rail. This is around $3k. Not my rifle but I want to do something almost the same.

Better than the Arsenal SAM-5 series?

In my opinion, yes. They are nice rifles but Arsenals just aren't worth the price these days. If you can find one cheap go for it. For MSRP I'd rather go with an ACE or Beryl. I own or have owned a Beryl, Mini Beryl, SAM5, and M90. I also have a Gen 1 ACE in 5.45 so my opinion is based on that. I assume the 5.56 ACE Gen 1s are great too but I'll put an asterisk since I never actually shot a 5.56 rock n lock ACE.

*ACE Pros: Pinnacle of AKs, Excellent machining
*ACE Cons: Price, Weight, COO

Beryl Pros: Good machining, weight
Beryl Cons: 18" thin profile barrel isn't the most accurate, Price, Imports and possibly spare parts imports ending

SAM5 Pros: So smooth, accuracy was great (sample size of 1)
SAM5 Cons: Price, weight, Early examples were overgassed to the point of doing damage to the rear of the receiver and peening the bolt carrier (this has been fixed by Arsenal by installing a restrictor in the gas port).

Zastava M90 Pros: Price, built like a brick shithouse, accepts the largest variety of magazines.
Zastava M90 Cons: Weight, a little rough around the edges as expected of an AK

A Galil Ace is “the pinnacle of AKs”?!

I’m getting banned today.

How do you figure? The operating system is straight up AK.
What are your parameters for considering a rifle an “AK”? Is the SCAR an AK? How about a Sig 556R for that matter?

The Ace is heavily inspired by the AK, but doesn’t even share a receiver, never mind lack of compatibility between most other parts.

The Ace is a perfectly fine rifle. Not an AK.

For starters, the SCAR doesnt have a long stroke piston operating system, so no, nor does it have a similar operating system to an AK. It doesnt have a removable top dust cover like an AK. Is a Sig 55x series an AK? Its pretty close, but no, I dont think it is an AK, even though AK Guy even refers to it as a Swiss AK. A Galil or Valmet on the other hand, are very much AKs or very heavily designed around the AK.

You should definitely take this debate to the AK Files.

Actually that shutter doohickey on the left side reminds me of the same kind of thing from an FN FNC.

I would still call these AK derivatives though and not really an AK. Even if its quite obvious what the design inspiration was.
