While browsing THR last week, I came across a post by a guy named "Halffast" The story is called "The Bug Out - A short story". Here's a link. http://www.thehighroad.org/showthread.php?t=172494

Well it appears that as well as being a gun person Halffast is also a writer.

The story got me to thinking about being prepared, and I think that is something we should discuss in another topic.

Also in his post, he puts in a plug in his signature line for a book that he has written. The book is a 611 page PDF file that is available for free. I have been reading the book for the past week, and just finished it. All I can say is WOW! This is a GREAT book. In the book, an EMP pulse takes out the power to all of North America, and most of South America. The story is about a county in Texas that pulls together and fights against unthinkable odds to actually survive what happens to the country.

I won't ruin any of the book for you, but if you are a anything like me you will have trouble to stop reading this book when you know you need to get some sleep, but you just can't tear yourself away from it.

Again, I HIGHLY recommend reading this book, and if you have thought anything about preparing for the worst, this will open your eyes.

Go ahead and read the short story on THR first, and I think you will be drawn to his style, and want to read the book..

The title is "Lights Out" and can be found here. http://www.giltweasel.com/stuff/LightsOut-Current.pdf

Glad someone agrees...

I need to make sure that my BOB and my BIS(bug in supply's) are up to date, and mostly that I have enough of them.

I would appreciate a forum that we could discuss plans and such that we have, escape routes, how to plan them, how to store things to either take if needed or to live on if we have to barricade ourselves inside...

This past week, with reading both that short story, and the 611 page novel has truly got me to thinking...

When Katrina hit, I started thinking about a SHTF scenario and whether or not I'd be prepared in the event of a natural or a man made disaster. I'm not one to be paranoid but I do like to know my options upfront and plan accordingly. I'd be curious to see what kind of info would show up in such a forum.

When we first moved into the house, we had a freak storm come through and we were without power and phone for about 4 days. From that and various power poutages I have learned many things.
One of the first things we bought after that storm was a generator. Living out in the sticks I keep plenty of food on hand also. Not like you can run down to the local grocery store. They are all at least 20 minutes away,no matter which direction you go.

OMG, I don't think I can read the whole thing after just that excerpt. But better to be pre-scared and prepared....hubby and I have some thinking to do!

The book is great. It's a different story completely, but just as good and at the edge of your seat the whole time.

I do recommend it.

In our case we would be bugging in, it would have to be something really catastrophic for us to leave.

You may want to go ahead and read that Lights Out book then. It's about bugging in under the worst of circumstances....

Noooooo, not at all. Just remember you need an alternate to cook also. Which we learned in the 4 days of no power. Thankfully living next door to my in laws helps. The have a gas range. We now also have the motorhome, where I can run the fridge, and stove off of propane. Once Derek get us the new Survival Forum,I'll run down my list of stash.
