BEACON HILL ROLL CALL: House speaker's error seems to spur mass vote-switching by Democrats
Disgusting. They should all be hanged.
Don’t know if they should be hanged, but for damn sure they shouldn’t be representing me!
How about amending the rules so that NO ONE knows the vote tally or who voted for what until AFTER all the votes are cast and counted?
If you're trying to avoid Follow the Leader, it won't work. They'll simply text.
Shows how much attention they pay to what they are voting on doesn't it ?
WTF is this about Deleo rarely being there ?
He too busy making side deals to line his pockets ?
Disgusting, but how is anyone surprised?
Disgusting, absolutely disgusting. What purpose do they have then, fire than all and make DeLeo Chancellor.
They don't even have to text. Participate in pretty much any legislative process from a gun club meeting to a Congressional hearing and it's pretty much the same methodology for herd-mindset people.
Here's an example:
Bob is friends with Ted. Bob and Ted are both members of the local gun club. John, another club member, wants to build a new indoor range. Ted opposes the new indoor range because he thinks John is gunning for his position as chairman of the pistol committee. Thus, Ted speaks out against John's idea whenever possible. Bob wants to maintain his friendship with Ted, so Bob votes the way he thinks would most please Ted, i.e., against John's idea.
Swap out the facts some and it comes out the same way:
Ted is a Democrat in the House of Representatives. Bob is the Speaker of the House and head Democrat in the House. A Republican has an idea that Bob opposes for any number of reasons. Ted knows that Bob doesn't like the idea. Thus, Ted votes the way he thinks will most please Bob, i.e., against the Republican's ideas and for the Democrats'.
You can't eliminate herd mindset/groupthink in a group-decision-making environment like a legislature. It's just not possible.
Disgusting. Nice job by the reporter putting that together though.
"Rep. Russell Holmes, D-Boston: “Welcome to the House of Representatives. This is exactly how the House runs itself and the members should be ashamed. The speaker is like a shepherd leading a flock of sheep."
"It’s simply a ‘follow-the-leader’ mentality where members seem to take their sole direction from the color of the light next to the speaker’s name with apparently little awareness or concern for the matter being voted on or its content. Leaning on colleagues for guidance and advice is OK; but the type of blind following we saw takes it too far.”
So I think it is safe to say this is more of a dictatorship than a democracy....
Well then, I've got good news for you. The Dems haven't been representing you, or me or any other taxpaying Massachusetts resident for a long time.
Shame! Shame! Shame!
Lemme know when it’s time for my shocked face.
Not at all surprising. But by far the best part of the article.
STATE PENSION FUND LOSES $4.5 BILLION IN FOURTH QUARTER 2018 — The Pension Reserves Investment Management (PRIM) Board’s Investment Committee met to discuss why the state pension fund’s balance dropped by $4.5 billion in the fourth quarter of 2018. State employees, teachers and some municipal workers retirement funds are invested through PRIM. The fund dropped from $73.8 billion at the end of quarter 3 to $69.3 billion at the end of quarter 4.
Executive Director Michael Trotsky called 2018 a challenging and volatile year. “These kinds of selloffs are not too unusual, as I mentioned we had similar quarterly losses in 2010 and 2011, and in fact we’ve had 23 large quarterly losses since the Great Depression back in the 30s,” he said. “Twenty-three of them in 90 years, so that means on average we get a selloff of this magnitude once every four years or so. And it’s been seven years since the last quarterly selloff so perhaps we were due.”
Not in the herald and I assume not in the globe too.
These exact words got me banned from twitter...along with calling our AG a carpet munching twat.
Meanwhile, the Boston Globe reporter thought there was a wiring issue with the board and thought the Russians were in on it. Excellent reporting from the Taunton Gazette!
It's the people's fault
Yes, same type of fudd bullshit happens in legislative bodies... great analogy!
I think what was disturbing in this case though is it was like EVERY one. It's like we know the belt democrats are going to follow the pied piper, but you would expect some dissent in the outer ranks once in awhile....
It pretty much is....democrat people.
Why is this a surprise? The Speaker is the head of the party. You can't know EVERYTHING on EVERYTHING. That's his (or her) job. So lots of folks short-cut it.
What bothers me is people voting for people who aren't there or are voting FOR them. You should have to toggle your own switch. "Bob. Flip my vote, please." Nice thing to put in the official record.
Anyone else notice the reference in the article - 5th paragraph I think - to the “ important” $666 million economic development package they wanted to debate?
Coincidence??? I think not!
DeLeo, the Senate president, also known as an unindicted coconspirator.
The last Senate president was kicked out because his husband was trading gay sex for political influence.
The last three house speakers have each been convicted of felonies.
Kennedy killed a woman.
Warren lied and stole minority positions.
On and on and on.....
And every single one a Democrat!
Yet the Masssholes just keep checking the D box.
Can’t we just copy and paste this entire thread response into the comments section on that Taunton Gazzette page?
Disgusting, really, with what we deal with here.
Exactly what I would expect from the leaches on Bacon Hill.
Separate names with a comma.
