WTF! How swearing in public could get you fined or land you in jail
    • Swearing in public places is illegal and can get you fined up to $660 in NSW
    • Summary Offenses Act 1988 states a person cannot use offensive language
    • In South Australia the maximum penalty is $1250 or three months’ imprisonment
Whether you agree or not, swearing in a public place can land you in a lot more trouble - and debt - than you expected.

Even though it's become normal to drop a swear word when you get frustrated, it is actually considered illegal when visiting parks, beaches and restaurants, right across Australia.

The Summary Offenses Act 1988 states: 'a person must not use offensive language in or near, or within hearing from, a public place or a school.'

Anyone caught in New South Wales, can be fined up to $660 or might even be required to complete up to 100 hours of community service.

While in South Australia the maximum penalty is $1250 or three months’ imprisonment.

Queensland and Victoria also enforce the stand and clearly define the language as 'disorderly, offensive, threatening, indecent, and violent.'

Police in the US have been arresting people they don’t like for doing that for centuries.

Pfft, my buddy from Australia would be serving life in prison. Fun fact, the C word gets tossed around really casually down there, not so much here.Seeing people's reactions to him using it in everyday conversation was always entertaining.

    Who decides what's offensive?

    THAT is the problem.

They should list the words that are offensive. Carlin could help. Is he still around? Jack.

    Do they enforce it?

There are all sorts of things that are "illegal" here and are not enforced.

I hacked up a lung curd several years ago and got a fine for hurling it into the street. 10 bucks. I think it was cambridge for public spitting.

Australians are incapable of not swearing. Swears are just sentence enhancers for them.

IIRC, those laws were passed to stop the spread of infectious diseases like TB. With the new unchecked arrival of aliens, it may be valid.

They must not enforce it much. Had an Australian roommate who cleaned up his language around here but would go "full Aussie" for fun to show us how they used to converse back home. The swear ratio was around 25%, random unintelligible Aussie slang 70%.

I thought swearing in public in Australia was mandatory .

I have to stop watching Ozzy Man on YouTube.
