At least nine Americans killed in Mexican highway ambush

Law enforcement in Mexico is Mexico’s problem and their jurisdiction, not ours. The last thing we need is to get drawn into yet another failed state.

We can't even handle law enforcement in the United States, let alone in another country. Mexico isn't just another state, it's a very large country.

I'd love to see Trump roll out serious sanctions against Mexico. Maybe throttle outbound wire transfers until they clean up their act.

Perhaps you misunderstood me. The phrase “failed state” is using the word “state” as follows:

“a nation or territory considered as an organized political community under one government.”

So “failed state” means a failed country with no effective government like Somalia or Afghanistan. It doesn’t mean a state of the United States that is messed up.

If this isn’t a strong enough call for 1. Decriminalize all drugs 2. Close down the southern border 100% (as in zero in, zero out, no more trades).. I don’t know what is.

Trump can instantly get a 20 pts bump in his approval ratings by articulating these two points in a special address from the Oval Office.

When local authorities are literally outgunned by the cartels, who have superior weaponry, I don't think sanctions are really going to be the straw that breaks the camel's back to get them to "clean up."

They'll lose the support of the people when they're starving VZ/NK style, but in any case F the cartels, F their government, and F the Mexican people who support it all.

Did anyone see the Vice documentary about the Mormon colony in Mexico that Mitt Romney's family was associated with? Pretty hardcore , one patriarch leader of the colony
sent a death squad up to the US at one point to settle some scores with a breakaway sect.

So now we can expect Mittens lead a Mormon commando force to creep into Mexico and wipe the floor of cartels?

This crap is not as uncommon as they would have you believe.
The reason NASCAR stopped racing in Mexico is that it was a major PITA just to get to the track in one piece.
All the haulers had to be at the boarder at the same time and the Mexican army would escort them to the track heavily armed. ACPs ect.
It was the only way to insure any of them made it there in one piece.
And once you where there, you never left the track , ever.

They were apparently mormons and dual US/Mexican citizens.

Welllll.... sorta.

The mainstream Mormon church disavows these fringe weirdos. The polygamists at Colonia LeBaron are the same kind of folks who marry their neighbors’ 14-year-old daughters because The Prophet sez so. Look into why Warren Jeffs got huckled, and that’s the same kind of stuff that goes on at the Mexican colonies.

John Krakauer wrote about these folks. It’s a chilling read.

Nothing excuses killing the kiddos, though. But these are Mexican drug cartels we’re talking about here, so I’m not surprised.

Like California.
Not even close.

I was in Silicon Valley this summer. CA absolutely has huge issues — power cutoffs, homeless, outrageous housing costs, etc.

But there is still a basic rule of law. The US Army isn’t patrolling the streets of CA. The local police aren’t being outgunned by cartel members in technicals with an M2 pintel-mounted in the bed.

Many of us, myself included, like to crap on CA, but the reality is that I would happily take a nice long road trip vacation in CA and drive from OR to San Diego. In contrast, I won’t set foot in Mexico.

I watch some of the game shows in the morning and are quite puzzled on people being so thrilled when they win a trip to Mexico considering most are from California the local news must be filled with horror stories from across the border. And before anyone says anything I have the tv on while doing house chores, wife in hospital so I'm a bachelor till the end of the month.

Not yet.

traveling in a motorcade? maybe they were wealthy, or even drug families, or maybe it was mistaken identity?
Just a bunch of cars with the same departure and arrival points driving near each other on the road. Hardly what one thinks of when using that term.

Take a read. It’s just not about vacations.

like I said what ever it takes....
We already have endless wars in the failed states of Afghanistan, Syria, and Iraq. We don’t need another one. Invade Mexico because a dozen US citizens are dumb enough to live in Mexico? No thanks.

We can’t fix Mexico and we have no business trying. It is up to the Mexicans to fix their country.

one article said they were traveling in 3 SUVs in a caravan - and that the cartel might have mistaken them for a rival group. Has to be something like that.

Or else it was their actual target. Maybe the family is involved in drugs. But you'd think they'd finish them off it that was their actual target.

I'm in favor of fixing Mexico by legalizing drugs - that'd wipe out the cartel's revenues and their power. But not by funneling billions into the military industrial complex for another failed drug war.

I'm guessing Trump is talking about the latter - he does have a few of those types in his cabinet.

I'm all for ending the war on drugs. However, if that isn't going to happen, let's have a friggen war - with air support, the whole 9 yards. Get it done quickly.

You can’t win a guerrilla war quickly. Even if you did “win” quickly, you then have to fix the failed state, which would take decades, cost billions, and still probably fail. If you just pull out after “winning”, then the insurgents and cartels will just reform.

We should've owned Mexico by now. I don't even count it as a country anymore. When your army tucks tail after taking a high value prisoner (chapos kiddo) you suck. When these cartel folk can walk or drive around and everyoonnee knows who they are without issue you suck. The list goes on.

I used to get a newsletter compiled by active and retired cbp. Every week it was a different place but the results were the same. Horrific violence perpetrated by cartels without consequence. Not much has changed. Just a new three letter designation for the different factions. Rip to those lost. I hope moab lands on the responsible group's hq.

Why? Why do you think we could solve Mexico’s problems any more than we have solved Iraq’s and Afghanistan’s problems?

Just like with the Iraq invasion, invading Mexico would result in the Pottery Barn rule — you break it, you bought it.
