Ashfield Select Board hosting forum on gun noise

There's a dude up the road from me a bit that has a range on his property. Popo has been called several times. First couple times that I heard it over the scanner, they brought out the tape measure to make sure he was legit within the law. After that they kind of gave up trying to give this guy a hard time.

The only solution is to build it into a range quickly (first target stands, shooting bench, and ACTIVE GUN RANGE warning signs up. And document the date by printing out photos of the range and getting them notarized to undermine the "not a gun range before the bylaw, just informal shooting". Then the shooter can negotiate from a position with a bit of strength.

An excellent point I read in one report was that gun noise is often no louder than a car slamming shut next door due to the difference in distance and acoustic obstacles, but the noise seems louder to the listener because they are emotionally bothered by the knowledge that it is "gun noise".

I live in Massachusetts, most people in this state are socialist liberal scum. I don’t want to know my neighbor.
Im in North Central MA......most if not all of my neighbors that live near me, think like me and are darn good working people.
I don;t know all of them but I know a lot of them, even the ones with big houses, that I think would be douchy, when I asked to walk thru their property
to hunt, they say sure, no problem.

Im absolutely sure there are liberal douche's in town, but I don't know that many.

Of course my area votes red in every election, and has a Republican Rep.......so we are not the norm here.

"(Complaining neighbor) mentioned this disturbance occurred 12 to 14 times in 2021 and at least twice this year. He said the noise, and its duration, are unbearable."

So roughly once a month last year, and twice this year?

So totally unbearable.

I was going to post about the law protecting ranges on noise issues.

I like your idea even better, but the former should also be mentioned. It should be read aloud with the Chapter and Section.
G. L. ch. 214, § 7B (from memory).

"As a result, former Ashfield resident Keith Harmon Snow, who had moved out of Williamsburg after a neighbor started a gun range in the adjacent backyard, went to discuss the problem with Shi at his home in Wellesley. "

If "former Ashfield resident Keith Harmon Snow" showed up at my property I would tell him to get off my property because he was trespassing. If he called me I would refuse to say anything other than I won't discuss the issue, bye and hang up.

How does a "former Ashfield resident" have any standing in this issue.

From both of the posted articles: "former Ashfield resident Keith Harmon Snow"

He appears not to live there anymore. He should STFU and go away. I don't see how he has any standing in the issue.

There was a time when you would just go talk to your neighbor(s) and work something out without getting the "Man" involved.
And yet, the one guy who went to talk to Shi and make him aware that there was a problem, gets slammed on NES.

I'm Pro Gun Noise... 🤔
Yup, after Fox Den opened within earshot I asked my neighbor what all the weekend gunfire was about. Neighbor was kind of eyerolley when they told me about the new training range. I replied that when some thug-ugly was strolling through the neighborhood, I wanted them to hear barking dogs and gunshots.

And yet, the one guy who went to talk to Shi and make him aware that there was a problem, gets slammed on NES.

I only say this because he is not a resident of the town. However I can see your point and if he is legitimately trying to find a solution to the problem then I very well could be incorrect.

What "Law". Setbacks for discharge of firearms are for hunting, not shooting on a range (assuming this is in DPRM)?

Section 12E. Whoever discharges a firearm as defined in section one hundred and twenty-one of chapter one hundred and forty, a rifle or shotgun within five hundred feet of a dwelling or other building in use, except with the consent of the owner or legal occupant thereof, shall be punished by a fine of not less than fifty nor more than one hundred dollars or by imprisonment in a jail or house of correction for not more than three months, or both. The provisions of this section shall not apply to (a) the lawful defense of life and property; (b) any law enforcement officer acting in the discharge of his duties; (c) persons using underground or indoor target or test ranges with the consent of the owner or legal occupant thereof; (d) persons using outdoor skeet, trap, target or test ranges

If Karen calls the goddamn police on me one more time over shooting at the airbase or explosives training at the airbase or blasting at the rock Corry and I have to put my pants on and talk to somebody.

I may finally snap.

This is the same type of people who couldn’t tell you which direction north is…

It's the top of the map. Duh.

I think half of America Doesn’t know which direction north is. In all seriousness you don’t need any tools to know which direction north is.

Three compasses and my phone couldn't point to north accurately.

Get out in the woods and suddenly it's all good.

I hate living close enough to the neighbors to be be able to stare them in the eye when I'm finishing.

Cops drove by once after a session. No surprise based on mag dumps but I do it sparingly.

In Epping, we hear gunshots in the morning these days. I don't care, wifes mentioned it. But, wasn't bitching. If it get's crazy. One of our dogs may hop on the bed. Funny part about that. The dog get's scared because she doesn't know what it is. However, she has stood right next to me while I shot.

This situation is just the beginning. They get their claws into it for the noise. Then, it moves on with a life of it's own. Like mentioned, oh poor me. I hear gunfire. If I was a Vet and had PTSD. It would trigger me. Or It could startle a horse that is not as well trained as mine.

Well Karen. That is a couple what ifs. Who cares. Guns are a fact of life here. And they are the reason we no longer answer to England.

If it was about the noise. Then, the talk would be about how to do it quietly. There are ways. I do find it funny. With the dead guy gone and the other person who moved. Sounds like the situation will resolve itself soon.

Ashfield is just a few miles away from my place. Most people in the hill towns are laid back, with a lot of hunters and sportsman who’s families have been there for generations. Unfortunately……. over the years rich people from the cities have bought farms and large parcels of land that the locals can’t afford. But the city people want to live this dream of the county life with, goats, horses, and the quiet life. I have the same crap in my town. A new couple in town asked me to plow small field for them which I probably would have done if not for the gigantic rainbow flag they have installed in front of their house. It’s a shame in the last 10 years they have gone as far as buying all the old boards off the Tabacco barns… F’in rich people. Now it looks like a bunch of wooden skeletons standing out in the fields.

Gun noise? What BS!
How about leaf blower noise? lawnmower noise? weed whacker noise? chain saw noise?
The lawn Nazi's in Westfield living around the ex-GF's house used to drive me crazy all summer. 8-10 hrs a day all weekend these guys were in their yards with every lawn contraption running.
Brookline Ma and Newton Ma already have decibel levels maximums on such equipment.

Cambridge might too and probably others.

There are threads on it.
