And of course, the locals, being devoid of logic and facts but overflowing with anger began chanting at the Police and calling them f-ing savages.

The article had a link to a decent column in the Globe about it but I disagree with the premise that he shot the cop to avoid going back to prison. Prison doesn't scare guys like this. He shot that cop because he was a violent animal, full of hatred and too stupid to live a decent life.

If by some miracle the government was able to confiscate all 200 million guns in the United States and not start Civil War II in the process, what would they do about the basement built guns? The blueprints would not be hard to find and anyone with a metal lathe and a little know how could just build them. They would create a gun smith black market.

There's some truth to this. If there were fewer guns there would be less _gun_ crime. It would also be a lot harder to defend yourself from violent crime. In general, no statistics I've seen suggest that a criminalizing gun ownership improves quality of life.
