Slight correction.

The Gauss gun isn’t a rail gun. It pulls the slug with electromagnets and doesn’t have a barrel that wears with any significance.

A rail gun pushes the slug with the energy in the rails. But the plasma wears the rails.

The forgotten weapons interview with the creator of this is worthwhile. He’s been working electromagnetic weapons for years and first tried rail guns. But they’re not really feasible in a portable setup. As capacitor technology improves and they get faster and faster to discharge their energy, Gauss guns will get their projectiles faster.

Also: rail guns are better at shooting lighter slugs and Gauss guns are better at shooting heavier slugs.
