So I googled it and yeah...

  • Apple's iPhone 12 may not come with a power adapter or wired headphones, according to TF International Securities analyst Ming-Chi Kuo.
  • Apple may omit these accessories to keep the cost of the iPhone 12, expected to be its first 5G-enabled smartphone, around the same price as the iPhone 11 lineup.
  • Kuo predicts Apple may not include the power adapter, but did not say whether a Lightning cable would still be included.
  • Kuo is known for his generally accurate predictions about future Apple products.

Those planning to buy Apple's iPhone 12 when it's expected to launch in the fall may find that the box is missing two familiar accessories: a power adapter and Apple's wired headphones.

That's according to TF International Securities analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, who wrote in a new research note that the power adapter and EarPods headphones may not come included with Apple's next iPhone. Kuo's research was reported by Apple blogs 9to5Mac, MacRumors, and Apple Insider on Sunday.

Apple is reportedly nixing these accessories to keep the cost of its next flagship iPhone around the same price as that of the iPhone 11 lineup. The iPhone 12 is expected to be Apple's first smartphone to come with 5G support, and Kuo predicts that slimming down the packaging by omitting the power adapter and headphones could help offset some of additional costs resulting from the addition of 5G.

The move could also make the iPhone's packaging more eco-friendly, particularly as sustainability has become a bigger factor in the way the company designs and ships its products.

Apple will reportedly release a new 20W charger that will be sold separately as an optional accessory, Kuo says. That charger would be larger than the 5W and 18W power adapters currently sold with Apple's iPhones.

The reports do not mention whether Kuo expects the Lightning cable to be included.

Apple did not immediately respond to Business Insider's request for comment.

It's not the first time reports have suggested that Apple's next iPhone won't come with wired headphones in the box. Kuo made a similar prediction back in May, but that report didn't make any mention of Apple eliminating the power adapter too.

If Apple does decide not to include a power adapter or wired headphones with the iPhone 12, it'll likely cause some controversy. Apple's decision to remove the headphone jack on the iPhone 7 was met with pushback, as some tech journalists initially criticized the choice at the time.

There's an argument to be made for why Apple shouldn't include a power adapter and wired headphones with the next iPhone. Longtime iPhone users likely have several pairs of EarPods and iPhone charging bricks sitting in a drawer at home, so it makes sense that Apple wouldn't want to drive up the overall price of the new iPhone by including accessories that many people may already own.

But doing so would also likely further fuel criticism that Apple is nickle-and-diming customers for accessories. A Reddit thread from 2018, for example, was loaded with customer complaints about Apple's power cables and storage options.

Apple is also reportedly planning to kill the charging port entirely by developing a completely wireless iPhone that may launch in 2021, Kuo reported in a previous note from December. Slimming down the iPhone's packaging by excluding accessories that rely on the Lightning port may be an early step in that direction.

Kuo is known for his generally accurate Apple product predictions. For example, in early 2020 he correctly reported that Apple would debut a new iPad Pro this year with a 3D sensor for augmented reality. He was incorrect, however, in saying that the new iPad Pro would come with a triple camera. Apple's latest Pro tablet has two cameras and a Lidar sensor for more precisely tracking a user's surroundings for use in AR apps.

The analyst also correctly said that Apple would release a MacBook Pro and MacBook Air with Apple's new keyboard in the first half of this year.

Other than 5G connectivity, Apple's iPhone 12 is expected to come with a new design that resembles the iPad Pro's aesthetic, a Lidar sensor like the one found on the iPad Pro, and a new, smaller size option.

Oh no. No more charger?? Like teh stupid charger they included last year with the proprietary plug??? (Not USB).

Every time someone gets up in Apple's grill for something they get rid of, we find out a year or so later that no one cares.

NO KEYBOARD!?!?!?! You can't type on a screen. That's stupid!!!

NO HOME BUTTON??? Are they INSANE??????!!!! You can't do anything without pressing a button. (Forget the fake button button.)

NO HEADPHONE JACK??? BUT WHERE WILL WE PLUG IN OUR BLUETOOTH HEADPHONES!!!?????!!!!

NO EXTERNAL MEMORY????? HOW WILL WE EVER GET STUFF OFF OF OUR PHONES????

Honestly - Apple cables are possibly teh worst of the apple-compatible cables. $12 for a good one that will last a few years seems fine to me.

No headphones?

Yes, because if they include the wired headphone, customers will just throw them out.

Everybody used ear pods now.

Wired headphones were already dropped years ago. iPhones haven't had earphone jacks for a while, so why would they come with wired headphones? Maybe they mean wireless earbuds, but they repeatedly say "wired".

LOL, and the apple zombies will buy it.

If Apple jaut used a standard charger this wouldn't be an issue, but NO, they have to squeeze every last dollar out of people with their Chinese phones.

What is amazing is that people buy them.

Get a Samsung instead.

They go through the lightning jack instead of a 3.5mm like they used to but are very much still wired.

I’ve been very happy with my iPhone experience over the years. Tried an HTC forever ago and hated it, tried a Samsung 9+ (galaxy?) and while it was far superior to the HTC, the screen had burn in issues just after a year and I never ran the screen above halfway on brightness. That camera though... sexy. Gave it to Dad because he needed a new phone and bought my Xs max. I went back to Apple because I’m happier with iOS, sue me.

Amen. Because Samsung phones are made in Bakersfield and Kalamazoo. [rofl]

What is a standard charger, BTW???? I own a few sets of headphones, a Kindle, and my son has 3-4 other devices. Thankfully 4 multi-function connectors will charge MOST of them, but not nearly all. Proprietary chargers are all over the place. The only thing standard with all of them is they'll go into a USB. As will Apple chargers. . . well, except for the last-gen which used proprietary plugs on both ends. (Firewire?? Something???)

Still on my (bought refurb) iphone 7. No way I will *ever* buy a $1000 device to browse NES, check my email, and run Waze
My work phone is still a 7 Plus / 256. I don't see myself getting rid of it, even though I didn't have to pay for it. On the other side I run a Note 10, which has been pretty decent to me.

My personal favorite is my dad freaking out about Bluetooth “radiation” and car radars “washing the road in emfs”. I should tell him I’ll buy him one of the new iPoods and hide it in the house to cook his brain.

I thought there was talk of Apple finally moving to USB-C. If they did, then they'd not have to bother with their proprietary chunk of shit charger.

As much as it pains me, I do like the Apple ecosystem. The shit just works. I don't have to worry about any sketch ass software making it into the app store like you would with Android. I'm also a fan of their support for privacy in that they actively refused to help the feds unlock phones.

I would not consider myself a fan boy by any stretch. I've tried Android, IOS as well as Blackberry phones and the best phones are Apple in my book...but that is my opinion. I know tons of ppl who love their Android phones. Only real issue I have with Android is that the carriers just don't keep up the OS updates very long. I had a Note 3 and got maybe 2 years of updates. At least with Apple, you can keep updating a device that is 3 or 4 generations old (or more) before Apple finally EOLs them.

I get the e-waste perspective, but that's also very cheap of them to put the burden of buying the charging accessories on the customer when you're already shelling out a grand for a phone. They should allow people to walk-in to Apple stores with a receipt to pick up a free charger after this move is set in place. I'd wager only those who actually need one would take advantage of that offer, thus making all sides happy. But I suppose you don't make it to $1.5 trillion market cap by being generous to your customer base.

I will be up at zero dark 30 ordering the iPhone 12. I am that guy, so what.
I used to be like that with Android flagship phones. Nothing wrong with it if you can swing it, but I've gotten tired of bringing a new phone back up to speed in terms of settings, so I no longer look forward to it as long as my current phone is still fast and holds a day's charge. I think it's just a combination of being jaded with technology and not seeing the "got to have it" breakthroughs anymore with smartphones.

I have never owned an Android so I can't compare. On an apple you just power up the new phone and choose to set up a mirror from your cloud. Thirty minutes later you have it set just like your old phone with the exception of your facial recognition. For some reason you are required to reset that feature. Apple sets the hook good, I will give them that, all my apple systems are integrated and seamless. It would be painful to switch out any of their products.

Correct regarding the slop, but they put nets up at the dorms to catch the jumpers. I guess that was cheaper than clean up + hiring and training new drone.

The headphones plug into the charging port. They still come with them.
