understand this is common in today's mind set. i have been banned from all events from my side of the family [my wife's side is more rational and fun]. mine are atheist, rabid narrow minded argumentative liberals with TDS and used a goofy facebook post, which others considered funny, as an excuse to pick a fight then turned it into a case of when one is being an a**h*** it is always your fault. they are what i refer to a overpaid, upper middle class suburban hicks; the type that cocoon in large secluded colonial houses and never have ventured into the rough side of life. i have 9 grand children, whom i don't forget on holidays, and have to mail their gifts. been told by professional social workers that if a side of the family is that much of a problem it is more healthy to get rid of them.

There's your problem.

I don't keep in touch with any family besides my mom and dad so I frankly don't know or care to know what their political values are. 3/4 grandparents have passed.

For language and content, that's over the top for both Faceplant and NES. I'd recommend deleting the post.

Yeah, it's essentially correct and it's funny- but for adults only. The family may have been PO'd because often the kids are on Faceplant.

What does that have to do with Trump and guns? Just askin'...

Had a good friend pick a fight just prior to the election. We didnt talk for like a year or so but we've since reconciled. My family has a pretty good rule of no political talk at family gatherings which helps to keep things civil.

Family's important. People shouldn't let it get broken up by a bunch of rich sociopaths who see everyone else as nothing more than tax slaves or votes to be bought.

And for the record-

They are not upper middle class suburban hicks unless they have a large colonial on at least a couple acres AND a Trump 2020 sign in the yard.

they are rabid anti gun and trump haters and have started fights out of the blue over the issues

Gotcha. How did you turn out OK? Adopted? LOL...

I really can't stand the rabid haters. I actually find it interesting to have a conversation with an anti-Trump person who can lay out logical reasons and conduct a civil discussion. Seems like those types are rare, however.

to have so much pent up anger over anything means there is something wrong with the person

if wifes family is cool thats a major plus. my in laws are rabid anti’s but thank the good lord my wife is a fellow 2A loving tinfoil hat type.

since leftist is an illness i expect them to act like ill people, including banishing others who fail to share their views.

Hmm.

You’ve got nine grandchildren, OP. Someday relatively soon, they won’t have a grandfather. Then, there will never be another chance for you to be in their life.

You should do whatever is in your power to make that happen. How do you want them to remember you?

FB = no politics, no religion talk (like the rules at the bar) to keep things among family amicable.
My sister and I don't talk because she is a rabid anti Trumper pro Bernie insane Socialist. I had to unfriend her. I am now at the point of just not going on FB and should just cancel and delete my account.

We don't have the specifics but if his family has bricked him out not sure there's much he can do... doesn't surprise me that commies would do stuff like that though. There are veins of leftists that make everything personal, which is f***ed given that 80% of political crap literally doesn't matter.

Keep your side of the street clean and make friends with people who are not crazy. You cannot help those who are irrational so let them swim in their own waste.

Stick with your wife’s side of the family, it’s clear they seem to be the ones who are actually acting like family from what you describe. Your social worker friend is absolutely correct on the matter.

True.

But I’m a guy whose one big regret in life is that I never knew one of my grandfathers. It would be sad if the OP’s grandkids were still dealing with the fallout from all this in, say, the year 2070 or so just because the adults in their lives were being petty.

Whatever is in the OP’s power. The grandkids matter more here than the grownups do.

My wife and I made it a point to go on vacation during thanksgiving week and sometimes Christmas. Politics was one of the chief reasons. Both sides are liberals. At times my older brother is so liberal that he can out Bernie Bernie. I am tempted to ask him how he feels about all the talk about college debt forgiveness. He basically went broke paying college tuitions for his two kids... he didn’t want them to be saddled with a lot of debts.

expect for me sending christmas gifts the rest of the family [parents etc] have us blocked; if you don't think like them that's the end period

We're going over a friends house for the 4th, who the last two years cornered me an started going off on Trump. Funny thing is this guy WAS a staunch gun owning conservative. Not entirely sure what happened to him besides maybe he finally caved to the ultra-liberal environment he works in.
Not sure how I'm going to handle it when he comes at me this year. Bite my tongue or make a scene, trying to find some middle ground somewhere.
Knowing me, I'll probably make a scene and walk out.

I had a good friend that I worked with for over 20 years. We played golf at least once a week and retired about the same time. He went to Florida and I stayed here but we still got together every year for golf. After Trump got elected he went batshit crazy. He would jab me every chance he got over Trump and was always provoking me. After our last golf trip two years ago, I couldn't take it any more and I told him we're done. I haven't seen him or heard from him since.

ERPO laws have upped the ante and stacked the deck against gun owners. All gun owners who have liberal dipshits for family members would be well-advised to exercise caution WRT discussing politics, money and other controversial topics.

no great loss, nothing human that is

Eight years ago, my daughter won some Presidential Achievement award in the 8th grade. She was top of her class for effort or something. My family took GREAT pains to harass me about having an Obama autograph in my house. (Strange I never discussed him or dislike or anything.)

Today? Well, my sister and her husband are mostly apolitical. My dad? Lifelong Southie Democrat type. Looking at voting Republican more and more. He's in shock of where the D party is going.

My brother and his wife? I mentioned they made and wore P-hats 3 years ago in the "he's gonna have all of the wimminz in the world arrested and sent to sex-slave camps" march.

I don't talk politics. Not at all. But I'll tell you, if it came up, I'd be tossed in a heartbeat. Thrown to the wolves. Because my older brother is oldest so he must be protected by the rest of the pack. (LOL) Thankfully we don't talk about it. But I see their posts (B and SIL) on FB. It's crazy. CRAZY!

Funnier still is they ARE the 1%. Like all lipstick liberals in New England they are 1%'ers but think that someone ABOVE them owes everyone BELOW them something.

All that said - they do do a lot of volunteer work. So some of it is putting their $ where their mouths are. But yeah, we don't talk Trump or I'd be kicked out. ROFL!!!

In this Republic circa 1860 I imagine families were the same discussions around gatherings about their President and I don't think it was any less contentious than today. In todays digital world it's easy to get lost and it's no exception for familys nor for nations. Trying to convert someone to accept your point of view is no mean task, but it's doable. Tossing the family because different POV's is just plain stupid. I worked though it with a pink hat sister and I can say it transformed our relationship for the better.

My family is more important to me than my political views. I hate the Democratic leadership and the leftie side of that party (AOC et al). But I also hate Trump. One of my sisters is a Trump supporter. Another of my sisters is very liberal, as is my mother. We just don’t talk much about politics. In fact, I’m about to head to the hospital to sit with my 94-year-old mother.

Presidents come and go. Don’t let politics get between you and your family.

Years ago I would put on libertarian hat and usually crack their brain in two (it often causes brain freeze) but nowadays I'd be more like "you guys are all into safe spaces and "free zones" so how about we make this a politics free zone for one day?" or similar, although my gut reaction would likely be more crass, something along the lines of "we're already marinated in this crap from every corner of the internet and tv every day, I'd like a break, please. "

Making a scene and leaving? Don't give them the satisfaction, that only validates their BS. You want to set it up to make them look insane, not you. [laugh]
