I'd like to avoid getting into an epic war like last year, so I'm just going to say my piece and try my best to avoid getting to sucked in.
I'm a liberal. I don't like Obama. Probably for different reasons than you, but I don't like him. I voted for him in '08 but voted 3rd party last year.
That said, I think Obama is just a shrewd politician. I think he (and most Dems) genuinely wanted to avoid the gun issue while in office, as they knew it was a shitstorm. And he did so for most of his term, even in the wake of a spate of mass shootings. But then Sandy Hook came, and what choice did he really have, given his constituency? So he's floated some relatively tame stuff that might not even pass Congress, so he can say that he did something. But I really don't think he gives a shit about guns and would prefer that the whole issue just went away, as I suspect most Dems do (state pols are another story).
There are a lot of people out there like me, liberals or moderates who support the 2A. They might not even own guns. There are compelling, logical pro-gun arguments that appeal to these people; they can be won over. Even arguments about preventing government tyranny, if posed in a calm and reasoned fashion. But all of that gets thrown out the window when pro-gunners drop the retarded Obama conspiracy bullshit. It's like Alex Jones on Piers Morgan, it makes us all look stupid and crazy.
So leave the quips at non-related political issues like Obamacare out of it. I'm trying to get my young, liberal friends here in the Cambridge/Somerville area on board, and they are open to reason, believe it or not. But it's getting difficult with the NRA and co drowning me out with conspiracy theories.
