Anyone found an auto antenna that isn't obnoxiously huge?

How about a 62 inch Comet CSB-790A? Works great for me and snags low flying birds.

If you add an automobile static strap as a counterpoise,
you can clock high-flying toads.

Getting some damn engine noise through the speaker. Thought I had a good ground location but now I am going to have to move it somewhere else to see if it gets better. The NMO connector didn't have a ground on it either so I may have to make something to ground it better than the way I have it now with a wire pigtail or something.

As long as your antenna doesn't hit the cab while under way, it probably will be fine, but too close and you can get a capacitive effect which will f*** up your SWR etc when that thing is swinging around.

OTOH, if you can brace the vertical element against the weight,
a capacitive hat can get you a resonant antenna with less height overall.
