I finally got around to to hooking up my garage hoist for my kayak. It was taking up my parking spot. I had enough LOL.

Wend out the last 2 sundays in the wind for some freshwater fishing. One sunday was brutal cause i was getting blown all over the place. The next Sunday was fantastic after i installed an anchor trolley and an anchor.

Not sure how i fished the last few years without this:

I agree. Even in the big rig I quickly get blown all over the place. I love my anchor trolly system.

I've been meaning to do a trolley myself. Last time I was out I got blown around like a bastard. It's no fun when you're fishing the shoreline and you keep slamming into rocks or low hanging trees. It's also a pain in the ass to paddle away from obstacles and fish at the same time. I've seen the do it yourself versions. It looks pretty simple. I'll probably just buy the one Madball13 posted.

Got a 35" Blue off of Sachuest Point on 9/9. It took about half an hour to get it in. The gears on the old reel were clicking and slipping, MH rod was bent in half. Also saw a (Marlin/Swordfish Type) fin that was about 16"L and 12"H YIKES!

I landed the Blue in the back well of my Hobie Adventure Island. Peddling out and setting the roller reefing sail to trolling speed is great. I need to add a tool holder to the back of the seat for easy tool access. A Haka is in the planning stage. The new http://jayjigs.com/custom_gaffs.html 28" gaff is perfect for the well. I also got his Spinner Bait Tube from West Marine.

Got another rod (Daiwa Sealine Surf SLS802MFS) & reel (Penn Spinfisher SSV6500) from Sam's Bait & Tackle at 936 Aquidneck Ave, Middletown, RI

Anyone use an ARC DeHooker? http://dehooker4arc.com/instructions.cfm

There are some big nasty fish out there, a club and/or a RI LTC may be next [rofl]

We did our annual boys weekend up to my brothers place in Behtel Me. this past weekend. We managed to get up Saturday mourning despite a night of drinking and smoking cigars around the fire on Friday night. Some of us headed to the golf course and some fished on the Androscoggin River. Saturday was a perfect day, sunny and warm, we put in in Bethel and headed for Rumsford. My brother brought his dog so he took his canoe and me, my son and a friend took kayaks and paddled down river. We had an awesome day catching smallies, chubs and even a few brookies. I like the little gas-powered boat catching the schoolie striper. That's pretty sweet. I'd rather catch one with my own muscles though, and hooking it yourself affords you the time to make sure you release it with minimal harm if it's undersize.

Anybody watch "Pacific Warriors" last night? It's about Kayak fishing in Hawaii. I DVR'd it but haven't watched it yet.

http://www.tvruckus.com/2015/10/23/pacific-warriors-take-a-peek-at-sea-kayak-fishing-in-video-preview-of-tonights-series-premiere/

Unfortunately in our area it's only blues and strippers from a kayak, although I did see a big fin off of Newport RI this summer. I'd like to "Gear Up" for next season, but the shops are telling me to stay with the spin-casting gear I currently have. I tried my bait-casting setup, but found it to be to slow to get out of the rod holder and unresponsive for a bend profile.

The youtube on-line video's for my type of kayak are great.

and Black Sea Bass, Tautog, Albies, Bonito, Fluke, and more [wink]

Agreed, I was referencing potential larger species for gear planning/sizing above my current (12-30 lb) spinning gear. Shops are saying that there's a very low probability to need heavier gear on a kayak in our area.

Our's is not a "The Old Man and the Sea" scenario area, but I wish !!!

Yup, I use 20 & 30lb braid on my yak spinning gear and 40lb braid on my conventional reel for jigging & trolling.

The trolling / bait-casting setup I found to be to clunky for use on the AI is a Penn 113H reel on a Penn 4/0 SS-3140RW 30-50lb rod.
I troll for mermaids with my spinning gear with Ben Franklin's for lures. On the beach it attracts blondes in bikinis [grin]

I troll with my spinning gear.

I troll with an Avet SX reel on a Shimano Trevala Butterfly jigging rod. The lever drag on the Avet allows me to easily move it into the live bait position to let out more line to keep my tube & worm close to the bottom. I know when I pull from the reel to the first guide I am stripping off ~2ft of line. Plenty of people troll with spinning rods, I just like knowing how much line I have out.

The US made Avet SX looks good. The places I talked to say they go with one size up in the narrow SXJ version (1 1/8 vs 1 1/2 spool width) so you don"t have to deal with the line bunching up. The West Coast guys say the "J" feels to tiny.

Kayak specific rods http://www.kayakfishmag.com/gear/kayak-specific-rods/ (Erics Tackle, Ventura CA, free shipping)

Safety Orange http://seekerrods.com/beacon/ Blanks in natural gray are available. US made. I couldn't find any local/east coast custom builder that would build with this blank due to untested chinese blanks being cheaper and allowing for a higher profit.

Not much grip in front of the reel, but the type A handle is their shortest at 24" (14 + 5 1/2 + 4 1/2)

Any others out there? Anyone doing a winter rod build?

I need one with a short butt and big top [rofl]

The price of all this stuff is adding up to a lot of BE's (Beer Equivalents) [shocked]

I went to the RI fishing show. Plenty of new big boats and loan agents. Not much for kayak fishing. Some Hobies were there from one dealer and another guy with an old kayak with an electric trolling motor on it, selling $600 batteries. Lots of turned up nose $$ gear made in China, the dealers did not look happy when I asked where their products were made. The reel I was looking for was not there, and the rep didn't know they had that model. No special pricing deals. I never went to one of these shows, and will not go to another one.

I'm new to kayaking and have a little experience fishing. A few weeks ago, I bought myself a Wilderness Systems Tarpon 100, weighs 55lbs and is 10 feet long. I've taken it out once so far at the reservoir. The weather lately here has not been cooperative. We are on day 15 of measurable rain [sad] I'll take it out 1 or 2 more times at the reservoir and then I'll take it to the Potomac River and fish from it as well. The section of the river I live near is pretty calm but I'm thinking of getting an anchor anyway since I don't weigh much and even though light, there is still a current. I'm still rigging up my yak... got to setup a milk crate and tackle boxes (ordered some Plano waterproof stowaway tackle boxes). I'm hoping to catch some bass but really, I'd be happy with any catch!

For those with the mirage drive how far do you go. I have been thinking I'd getting one. Using mainly boston harbour to visit island and fish.

Anyone here kayak fish the cotuit/poponesset area? I've been fishing on a 9' lake style kayak that I put rod holders on, no more than 300 yards or so off shore. I'm interested in going further off shore but would lIke to have a buddy kayak. And also see other setups.

My brother and I did a couple years ago. Popponesset Bay, and paddled out around the tip of the sanctuary and then past Popponesset Inn. We also paddled from the Barnstable boat ramp, out around the tip of Sandy Neck, and back . I have a sit in kayak and will never do that again. If you dont have this stuff already, I would highly recommend a sit on style kayak with a PFD ( some people neglect to wear them) , leashes to your body and the paddle, and possibly a brightly colored flag when venturing out , especially in salt water. Conditions can get downright nasty really quick and not everyone is paying attention to where they are going.

1776 - that is the perfect kayak setup right there.

A good well loaded PFD is a must. The bianchi 1911 mag pouch holds an icom m88 radio
The wife holds the insurance policy [frown]

I love kayak fishing. I've got an Ocean Kayak Trident 11 Angler. I also have an Ocean Kayak Tetra 12 Angler and a Malibu Kayaks Mini-X. I like the Trident best. My wife paddles the Tetra (she doesn't really fish but it doesn't matter) and my 9 year old daughter the Mini-X. It's fun paddling and fun fishing out of them. We go out in the ocean and have a great time.
