Anti-gun government schools.
Great . . . more overreaction typical of the anti-gun culture permeating government institutions . . .

Educators at Brody Middle School must have had the fright of their lives given the way they panicked at the sight of a bag of empty shell casings . . . empty shell casings that had the word “Blank” clearly printed on the side of each one.

Knowing no other way to save their students from the horrors of empty blanks, school officials suspended Jazmine Martin, who had brought the casings to school for show and tell.

Jazmine and her family had recently attended an old west show during their visit to the Circle B Ranch on a summer vacation in South Dakota.

The show’s highlight was a simulated gun fight, after which Jazmine excitedly gathered up the shell casings.

“They picked up the shells as souvenirs of that event -- it was wonderful," said Chenoa Martin, Jazmine’s mother.

Her daughter was eager to show her findings to her science teacher, but it proved too much for her Principal, Randy Gordon.

Apparently, even a mere interest in anything related to firearms or ammunition is strictly forbidden in government schools, and anyone who steps out of bounds simply must be punished.

Thank goodness her parents are fighting this outrageous suspension to make sure their daughter maintains her unblemished record.

If the same thing happened in MA, several charges could've been filed: parents gave ammunition (per MA definition) to non-licensed minor, and possession of ammunition on school ground.

Good thing I didn't bring my .45 ACP empty case to school that I got at the FBI building firing range when I visited Washington DC....and it wasn't a 'blank'.

Same thing happened in MA to some kid from Winchendon (I think) a while back. School suspended him for having an empty casing from a blank that was given to him by some old timer at a parade.

Why expect common sense in anything touched by the government?

My son runs high school track and I await the day that he needs to anticipate the starters clap to start the race. How long before the starter pistol is verbotten on school grounds? For the sake of the children.............

Well there's still hope at my state school, 21 gun salute when fourth today with 7 M4s.

Public schools are just going to hell in a hand basket anyway. One of the elementary schools in Newton banned Halloween a couple years ago. OTOH, half my high school carried leathermen and swiss army knives and nobody ever batted an eye.

this is exactly why our country is going down the crapper like it is. Because we knee jerk reaction everything.

Instead of "LEARNING" about firearms and somewhat "EMBRACING" the concept of sportsmanship and a no ill intent deed like this we punish and turn our backs to one of our countries greatest freedoms. Everyone in the school systems is so afraid of this kind of thing. Even when I was in school it was nothing to bring my .22 rifle in and lock it in my car so after school my buddies and I would go plinking if I was not playing sports. Now you cant even bring in some blank souvenirs from a show to educate and show people.
I guess it does not surprise me that they acted this way though. Par for the course.

man sometimes I wish I lived in another time in this country. Maybe back 50 or 70 years ago when our country was tough on crime, embraced the bill of rights and actually has some good ole common sense when it came to dealing with things. Now almost EVERYTHING we do, we do wrong. This is a prime example.

Oh well.... I guess it could be worse.

[rant]Zero tolerance is STUPID and a load of crap slung by school districts. It should be on a case-by-case basis, not auto-expulsion, ad nauseum.

Expulsion for pictures? Even making a symbol of a gun with your finger and thumb? This is insane.

I think it is the anti-gun NEA's agenda that has been pushed to the extreme. And the schools have done a fine job over the last 30 years "indoctrinating" the students to become "responsible" sheeple. [angry]

When I tell people that I was born a few hundred years too late they look at me like I was nuts. Countless stories like this just confirm my belief.

... high school track ... How long before the starter pistol is verbotten on school grounds?
Where, at the same event, there are half a dozen competitors, each with an 8 foot long, sharpened spear.

My cousin from Springfield MA used to tell me about how he and his older brothers used to bring there .22 rifles to school in the 50's, and put them in there school lockers (un-locked)....they were on the school shooting team, an official after school activity !

Then JFK started busing people from down south to Springfield, and they ended up with a crime spree that lasts to this day. It wasn't even safe to walk the streets there....in the day time!

looking for comments...

Is the zero tolerance BS a response to lawsuits rather than a response to violence in the schools. If schools were able to make a judgmental decision on an action, could litigation start thus exposing the school system to insurance increases????

Bottom line, i cant believe that people are this stupid.. there has to be a deeper reason for it.... I hope

I believe job security has more to do with it then liability. Add in a large dose of political correctness, and the fact that most (not all) teachers are leftists/statists, and you have your answer.

A teacher/administrator only has limited exposure to lawsuits, since the employer is usually (lawfully?) obligated to defend them. Even if they lose a lawsuit, the system has much deeper pockets then the individual teacher. Most teachers have a liability insurance policy, either purchased personally or provided through their union. Teachers also have some additional protection in that the courts have held that they act in loco parentis, in place of the parents.

When I had to make a decision regarding a student, I tried to ask myself how I would want my own kid to be treated. Usually, that's a fairly safe path to follow. I did see teachers treat kids rudely. These same teachers would go berserk if their kid were treated like that. I also saw many parents who refused to believe that their kids could ever do anything wrong. [thinking]

The problem in schools is that everyone is playing 'cover your a$$.' I heard an old ditty many years ago that goes something like this:

The teachers are afraid of the Principal
The Principal is afraid of the Superintendent
The Superintendent is afraid of the school board
The school board is afraid of the parents
The parents are afraid of their kids
And the kids are afraid of....nothing.

There's a lot of truth there.

EDIT: One of the things that I found attractive about NES was that there were several teachers here who hadn't consumed the kool-aid. Those types of teachers were darned scarce where I was working. It's interesting to be "the right-wing gun nut" when you're surrounded by moonbats. [wink]

One word: Columbine.

My wife is from Florida. Some students were suspended from her private HS because they mentioned they had a shotgun in the trunk of a car as they'd been out hunting in the morning. In her day that was routine.

It's both....
After busing people up here in the early 60's, they started busing the kids around schools too....and the kids started using weapons (that they never did before).
Then the Black Panthers started walking around cities holding there shotguns, and we got all kinds of new 'bearing arms' gun laws. And yes, seeing that at least 95% of public teachers are socialists they liked that.

Then on the other hand, the Democrat party gets more money from trial lawyers that ANY other group (including unions)....so in Democrat states, or when Democrats hold power in Washington, they get free reign to apply there craft.
And that is by the way, is why there is no meaningful TORT reform in there new health care bills....maybe the #1 reason of rising health costs, that no other country has to deal with like here (we have 10 times as many lawyers that other industrialized countries)!

Then add to this the politically correct social experiment of the last 40yrs thought up by 'sissy' psychology types. We were supposed to get a social paradise, but instead we get people that go nuts!
There's a reason why there are no stories of people not being able to cope with social pressure, and decided to go on a killing spree before the PC movement!

If you think the anti-gun stuff in schools is anything, try coaching youth sports.

After the beating death by hockey dad Thomas Junta, youth programs all over the country started sprouting all kinds of new policies. Some Little Leagues now pay for police details at games, and others make parents sign a "Code of Conduct" contract before attending games.

We are a hideously litigious society.

It wasn't this bad when lawyers couldn't advertise their services and 'contingency suits' were scarce.

EVERYone is afraid of litigation. If they can use that fear to also serve their political agenda (ridding the planet of firearms), they're all for it!

they already do that at some schools and universities. they use the same starting method as they do for swimming; a flash and a beep. i saw this at a track meet held at NU and i think Bentley.

The spent primers alone could have gotten the kid arrested and arraigned on juvenile charges of unlawful possession of ammunition. It is not just the school that is anti-gun but this entire socialist state.

ok, here's the flip side for you. I have the day off, my 11yo just gets off the school bus with his latest project in his hands...he received an A for his work. Included as a visual aid was a souvenior, case drilled out, 50BMG round we had purchased a while back at a gun show.

I flipped when I saw it, hadn't realized he was taking it to school....."it's OK dad, I asked Mrs Johnson earlier in the week when I came up with the project idea, she said fine, as long as it wasn't a live round...another kid did a similiar project with a .223 "

I dying to talk to this woman next week at parent teacher night.[smile]

it's all leftist pc bullshit.i went to the same tech high school as my dad(him, class of 73 ,me 99).even though its a inner city school,in his day they had a rifle team.students could bring their own or use SCHOOL supplied .22's.by the time i started there in 95,i got suspended for having a small chain wallet, had my keys taken as they were considered a weapon, had my leather jacket confiscated because along with the chain wallet was seen as "anti-black white supremacist gear".being a trade school & taking auto shop, cutting tools are kinda necessary.but again i was suspended for a pocket knife, which afterward i still refused to stop carrying.they got fed up with my horrible common sense & expelled me junior year.all this stuff that landed me in heat would have not even been thought of in the 70's,but now we live in pc hell.if i ever have kids, its gonna be homeschooling.the horror stories i hear from friends with kids in school almost makes ya not want to have em in the 1st place.and discipline...99% of kids today are ***** jackyls lol.its all because discipline in the traditional approach will land a parent in jail.anyone over the age of 25 most likely got the belt a few times amongst other things as a kid if we stepped outta line.today all these douchbags think of you as a nazi if you dare raise a hand.this country has gone to hell &from what i see will only descend further into the shitter.

While the teacher is to be commended for thier common sense, it would be irrelevant if someone in administration or another teacher, with an axe to grind, had called foul. The comment above about spent primers is, unfortunately, the way of the (around here) world....

One of the things my kids do before heading out is to check the pockets. Their hobbies are not secret, but problems are better when avoided.... And this sort of problem, here in Mass., is a BIG one if there's someone trying to "think of the children!"

I remember back to when I went to the Westover Air Base for an air show and they had crates full of spent 30MM GAU-8 Avenger casings for anyone to take home as a souvenir. I believe the ones I took were (marked on the casing) the PGU-15/B TP Target Practice and a PGU-14/B API Armor Piercing Incendiary round. I used them to hold change, a task they performed quite well.
