NRA set off the medical community last November 2018 with a the Tweet: “Someone should tell self-important anti-gun doctors to stay in their lane. Half of the articles in Annals of Internal Medicine are pushing for gun control. Most upsetting, however, the medical community seems to have consulted NO ONE but themselves.” A LexisNexis search shows that in the last 9mo upwards of 300 news articles have hashed and rehashed that Tweet, the vast majority being doctors justifying their claim to the lane by virtue of guns putting holes in bodies that they must fix and gun being like a viral epidemic that must be eradicated.

But they do more than claim the lane - they hog the road by blocking any other profession or avocation that disagrees with them. New York Times twice in 2017 published articles based on interviews of gun experts, as did Rand Corporation in 2018. With 32 and 95 gun experts, respectively, both NYT and Rand could both find only 1/6th of their respondents that favored more permissive gun policies with 5/6ths favoring more restrictive gun policies. As expected, both surveys largely supported more guns laws. They hardly mentioned that their gun experts expected that any and all gun laws enacted tomorrow might not even halve the gun deaths in the USA. That is, a politically and legally insurmountable goal of restricting guns in any way conceivable short of an absolute ban on gun ownership by non-LEO/Military wouldn’t bring the USA gun deaths down to what they considered the norm for civilized 1st-world countries. Doesn’t that suggest there are other solutions?

The Rand study gave short shrift to a 2016 survey by John Lott of 74 criminology and economics academics that showed disagreement with their conclusions supporting more gun controls. Lott extended his study in 2019 to include 120 public health workers (doctors), criminologists and economists to confirm outcomes that doctors survey almost opposition to criminologists and economists on the efficacy of gun policies and laws. Do Researchers From Different Fields Have a Consensus on Gun Control Laws and Do Registered Voters Agree With Any of Them? by Arthur Z. Berg, MD , John R. Lott, Gary A. Mauser :: SSRN

The reality is that it’s a 2-way highway with multiple lanes moving in opposite directions at different speeds. Doctors just want it to be a one-way road with they the only ones on a single lane highway.

While Climate Change advocates can claim 97%+ of professionals agree man caused recent significant climate change, experts in Gun Policy are nowhere near labeling an outcast faction of Gun-Ban Deniers as a tiny minority. But they’re trying...
