An M1 Garand question.

Anybody have a lead on a reputable appraiser for Garands?

1st. don't do anything to it !!! (until long after you hash out what you have).
if this was your buddies wartime-take-home rifle, you have a piece of american heritage.
2nd. head over to the CMP Garand forum : CMP Forums start this same conversation there. they like pics more then here though.
that group of forumers know the garand well. The CMP themselves offer resources (see that forum) that can show serial number history.
3rd. field strip it, take pics of all the stuff and especially any markings/cartouches. show them here (nes forum) and there (cmp forum).

I would take it to someone reputable to assess it. If any parts are refinished, I wouldn't do anything to it.
I'm unsure if you can replace stocks on the rifle without modifying other parts of the firearm. If you can, there are websites that sell surplus stocks.

I’ve been banned from the M14 forum for years now.
The new one too? They mostly migrated to that M14BR (battle rifle) site. Haven't been there in months- there are some extremely pompous @ssholes there. Though they are not the most knowledgable ones by far, they know enough to F with anyone who is not a total M14 phag. The ones who have the highest skill sets and knowledge are alright. I guess the ones who are not quite at that level seem to think that acting like a douche is going to put them over the top.

There’s definitely some dickheads over there, but my ban was nothing but positive for my gun collection, lol...got rid of half of those junk M14’s and replaced them with reliable weapons
