Good long form interview with Alan Gura where he discusses the Heller and McDonald cases, and why he's no big fan of the NRA. Great stuff.

I have to face a dichotomy:

I celebrate Alan Gura, who has absolutely kicked ass in court, and showed up the finest legal minds at the NRA who kept waiting for "the right case", instead of finding and/or creating it, as Gura did.

I was a big cheerleader for SAF for funding the fight.

But now I have major reservations about Alan Gottlieb and SAF, after the Washington I-594 debacle. And now I understand why some people objected to Gottlieb getting control of JPFO.

Gura is a hero. Gottlieb is a snake.

Please elaborate for those of us that are not in the know. What is this you speak of I-594 debacle?

Oh right, Alan Gura kicks major ass #OneManArmy

I-594 was a Washington voter initiative that passed, which makes private transfers illegal going through a dealer for a background check. And "transfer" is defined so broadly as to include gifts to family members, or even letting someone else try out your gun at the range.

Be careful what you read on the issue, because Dave Workman is Gottlieb's press puppet. But the basic thing is this: Gottlieb wants to "fix" I-594, not nuke it out of existence.

The reality is there never was going to be a perfect case. NRA never wanted it. They have a role but they're not going to do anything that could potentially kill the goose that laid the golden egg.. Heller was the definition of perfect, legally speaking. The NRA caught serious flack for trying to derail it... but even then, Gura broke their nose in court and pressed onward. [laugh] There will always be what-ifers but frankly all i have to say to them is that "NRA Perfect is the enemy of good".
