I'm finding it hard to resist the urge to buy a Romainan AK kit and receiver to build up. About $100 for a kit and $60 for a rec makes it look very atractive.
I'm hearing that the barrel pin can be a bear to get out and it's tough trying to decide to use screws or rivets.
Anyone here built up a Rommie? Have tips or hints? Is it worth the time and smashed knuckles?
Thanks,
Jon

Well it's not quite that cheap, but close. In addition to the receiver and parts kit you'll need the required number of U.S. parts. In order to keep the threaded barrel and brake you'll need to have 6. The receiver is one, generally the trigger group (3 parts), gas piston and pistol grip are the others. Expect to spend another $50-60 for those parts. Also, if you live in Mass you'll need to do something about the bayonet lug on the kit - either remove it or render it unusable for mounting one. You'll also need screws or rivets depending on the build, along with some drill bits and I highly recommend a drill press if you don't already have one. Otherwise go to akfiles.com or the site I prefer - gunco.net and you'll find everything you need to know.

Thanks guys, I've reading up the info on both of those pages plus the article in SGN. Still don't know if I want to try but it could be a good winter project. I think the mechanics shop where my wife works has the drill press and I'm hoping a hydraulic press as well.

Jon, check out TAPCO for compliance parts. That's where mine came from, and the triggers they sell (G2) are just awesome. Single hook is easier to install than double hook, and FWIW, the RomAK 3 trigger is single hook. If it's good enough for a sniper rifle, it's good enough for a regular AK.

You want the Tapco G2 group, but don't buy it from Tapco. Lots of other folks have it cheaper. DPH arms is the first that comes to mind, but if you look at the classifieds on gunco.net or akfiles.com you'll find others.

Scratch the build. I decided to buy a WASR instead.
Thanks for all the tips and I may try my hand at it anyways.

Yeah, I see that. I still recommend a build. I'll discuss that ONLY FTF, not online. Nothing illegal, just won't discuss it online. If you make it the 15th, ask me then.

OK Nick, I hear ya.....I won't be able to make the 15th. Oct has become one busy ass month for us on the weekends. I'll be burning some vacation time this month for sure.

Looks like prices have gone up some, but here's the link and picture. You may be able to beat the trigger price, but get this lock plate, anyways.

Trigger set, $40

Pistol grip, $25.

Or get the combo for $60, and have a spare gas piston.

You'll still need the plate, $12:
