actually 2 questions. when you play air soft war games, what ammo is being used? the reason i ask is i'm watching air soft games on you tube. this one guy has a camera on a sniper rifle and he's hitting his target, obviously man sized, at what looks like up to 50-60 yards. it looks like they're shoot paint ball size pellets. they arc but shoot straight.

i own a ppq replica air soft pistol that takes .12 gram bb's (biodegradable material...plastic????) and at best it's accurate at 20 feet, outside of that accuracy dwindles a bit. they certainly are far from paintball diameter.

my little pistol is spring operated, i have to cock it by racking the slide for each shot. these guys are using pretty advanced stuff and they are gas operated. so 2nd question, it a gas air soft gun that advanced to launch it's projectile 50+ yards with surprising accuracy? cause no matter how my little gun is powered, i doubt those light bb's could fight the wind resistance and hit anything at those distances.

just curious, not gonna take up air soft.

I’ve never fired an airsoft gun but always figured they were just an adult version of the old plastic yellow BB shooters we’d get at the local comic book store back in the 70’s for like 1.99. 🤷‍♂️
Those and the ones that shot little yellow discs. Lots of fun back in the day and nobody got swatted, charged or made the evening news for being kids.

I used to mess around with air soft air soft and I can say for sure a .12 gram BB is not going to be accurate. Usually the cheap BB’s are very light and somewhere around that weight. You need a BB that’s at minimum .2 - .36 grams to get any accuracy. The higher end guns also have adjustable “hop up” to increase your range. Hop up is the back spin the gun puts on the bb as it fires.

yeah, pretty much how i remember them but they seem to come up a bit in price. i saw a review of an air soft replica of a mp 40 done by a guy in the uk...damn thing cost him the equivalent of $900 u.s. dollars.

my pistol is plastic and amuses me as it sit watching tv shooting it into a target box. cost was 20 bucks, these guy i watched, the slides cycled the next round from a detachable magazine.

i was just curious as to what the equipment was, and ammo they fired, to get the distance and accuracy in these vids. granted, my air soft ppq was the cheapest i could find on amazon.

I'd imagine there is a world of difference between a 'pro' airsoft gun and a spring actuated one.

I looked at one airsoft M4 that costs almost as much as a real gun (not the special one it mimics, but a real gun nonetheless)
yeah, some of them are pretty good copies. i've since found out that the good ones are made under license from the actual gun companies. kind of surprised me at the time...

i'd basically call mine a toy but it fooled someone here on nes to think it was a real walther when i put up a pic of my computer desk and it was laying out. of course an in person inspection would set that right. mine still has the orange tip. that's like the tag on a pillow, against the law to remove.

I "got into" it, about 25 years ago. The whole war games with dedicated teams, etc, played at the big paint ball ranges. Standard airsoft bb size is 6mm.

Most bb's were in the .22 to .30 gram range depending on how fast / far you wanted to shoot them. Some of the higher end rifle length barrels could easily hit someone in the torso at 80-100 yards. I had a battery driven MP5 that shot around 300rpm and 350 fps that I could hit shots out to about ~35 yards. I had a 16" M4 that shot 400fps (usually the limit for most places) that was very accurate to 40-50 yards.

I have had a few gas guns, and even a customized 375 fps 1911 and with .25's I'd say the max body shot range was 50 ft. You can spend a lot of money on them. IIRC the guns we're 250-300 each then you start upgrading the motors, gears, springs, batteries... eeesh. I spent a LOT of money back in the day.

The started coming out with shotguns, "grenades" and even M203 rounds that shot lots of bb's when I "quit" playing.

My son plays and has an H&K mp5 that cost 400 bucks.... along with an G&G machine M4. They will both bury a 6mm pellet in you at close range. Super fun lol

His guns are accurate out to 30 yards without any mods, and electric, so I imagine a pro model can do better

I taught myself to shoot with air soft guns and bb/pellet guns in my back yard every day when I was a kid. I’ve had a quality Sig 550 AEG for years that I haven't shot in years, but man that thing was a blast. I could ping cans all day at 30-50 yards. I believe I was partial to a .20g BB. Makes me want to break the thing out again and have some fun.

They are biodegradable plastic BBs and most of the higher end guns have a "hop-up" system which puts a backspin on the pellets keeping them on a steadier trajectory out to a maximum of 100 yards. When I had one 20 years ago it sounded like an angry sewing machine on RC car batteries, electro-pneumatic system. I guess the newer ones have simulated blow-back. Years ago it was pretty much only two companies making them which didn't even like selling to the US, Tokyo Mauri and Classic Army of Hong Kong. Now there are dozens of companies making them under license as a major competitor to paintball.

Yes, airsoft is gay.

Next question.

The LARPing, yeah, I'd tend to agree with you.

But, going into it with tactics in mind, would be different. Get your 'team' together and see how you do vs 'the they' out there. I learned a solid lesson playing laser tag with my 3 kids:

Tactics only work when people aren't running around like monkeys. I got hosed because they had no instilled fear. I was treating it like a real encounter. I don't imagine most of the LARPing Anti-fas think about the real world implications of getting shot. They aren't going to utilize tactics like a trained person will.

And that, my friends, is a thread hijack/crossover I'm proud of.

I played once for a friend's bachelor party. People wear so much crap they kept saying I couldn't tell you hit me when I buried 5 center mass.... I almost went in for a buttstroke to the head by default.

Played ’real’ airsoft with a KWA with lipo batteries 10 years ago or so. World of difference between the cheap spring ones from Walmart or Dicks. You had aim by the stream of full auto bbs rather and the sights

the guys i'm watching are playing in belgium and they don't look too padded up. eye glasses are about it, and not the goggles. if they get a hit or 2...and they don't get an audible "hit" from the guy...they give him one in the face. that wakes up their sense of fair play. it's pretty amusing to watch, the expression on the guy after getting hit in the face is priceless. better one in the head than being called a cheater. but from the reactions, you can tell they know they were hit, they always look down at the impact spot. i guess if your opponent is very close they won't actually shoot them but just yell "shot" at them.

My son is big into Airsoft and has been pushing me to buy a gun and join in. Why play a video game character when you can BE the character in a video game? Gay? Nah... Fun? YEAH! Do I really need another hobby to rabbit hole? No!

He plays at Feel Good Farms in NH. Well run place and reasonably priced.

I was airsoft guy for about 10 years working as tech/smith/builder and when it was around - TOLCOM staff member at a field in Tolland Mass.
Sniper rifles shoot 500 fps or 4.1 Joule limit. Regular AEG's 400 fps or 1.8 Joule limit.
Snipers had to complete a course and could not take shots closer than 100 feet. So the "course" was really a range estimation class and took about 5 hours.
The heavier the BB, the greater the range, Joules of force is what it came down to. The FPS limits were there to keep people safe.

Wind drastically blows BB's off course. Hell grass and leaves will provide some cover in some instances. But AEG's with a hicap (500+ bb's) mag can start shredding foliage.

Joules of force chart.

I have 3 kids and I stopped airsoft a while back. If my kids get interested in it I may pick it back up.
Here are my M60's. There is also a Swedish K and 1919a4 I built.

I did airsoft for a while and used 6mm .20g BB's in my various airsoft guns. Make sure you wear a vest, you know one of those antifa styled riot vests (lol) when you play airsoft. It might be a BB but it still hurts pretty good to get hit. I still have all of my airsoft guns to this day including a nice tricked out Colt M4 knockoff that has better optics and gizmos than my actual real life AR15 lol. It's a lot of fun and some of of the guns certainly feel pretty realistic holding them. Not completely realistic but close enough.

My son plays and has an H&K mp5 that cost 400 bucks.... along with an G&G machine M4. They will both bury a 6mm pellet in you at close range. Super fun lol

Like this? lol
This was a simunitions round from an AR. As we breached and entered the room I hit him 3x in the chest and he didn’t go down so without thinking I just immediately did a failure drill on him. Yikes.

Felt bad. I didn’t even know the guy, it was a large training scenario where UMASS Boston BioLab was taken over by terrorists.

I immediately called a code 4 and went over to check on him. He went down hard on the floor.
I was talking to him and calling for a medic, trying to keep him calm, he said, “Hey man how bad is it?”
I said, “Just a scratch bro, you’re good.” lol

So I said, “Here let me take a picture of it, it’s nothing man.” lol Just trying to keep him sort of (nervously) laughing and taking up time until the medics came up.

They had to take the poor bastard out on a stretcher and surgically remove the round from under his skin we heard later. Those Sims round are no joke.

I’ve got four cheap guns that are just toys. I’m into this for like $25 for all four.
the light .12 grain bbs are crap. .20 does good but any heavier doesn’t have enough oomph outta my toy guns.
I like mine. They’re great for insect control, motivating the kids or irritating the wife.

All trigger time is good if you use it right.

for people in "less free" countries, airsoft or full size replicas is the closest they can get to the real thing. There are few guns for which it's true here, just because they are not importable or ultra rare in the States.

Some replicas are very accurate, especially the older ones and would legit chamber a mag or could be used as the real receiver with some mods, but those days are over. Still, there are tons of accessories, furniture and other crap that it's airsoft, but would fit on the real gun.

Russians legit used the same parts for their replicas as real guns, probably because they are lazy and because the demil procedures are known. The cool thing about it, there were some intermediate variants of AK-12 that surfaced early and then were never accepted. There are few "airsoft" replicas were made and sold. You will not be able to see to intermediate guns even in museums, so there is some value of this gheyness.

I own some airsoft pistols that I bought years ago. One or two are spring powered, the rest use CO2.
I wanted to set up a few targets in the back yard, and use it for cheap stress relief.
Between lack of free time, and concerns that the neighbors would soil themselves and have the local lawr enforcement ossifers at my door, I never followed through.
They're decent looking replicas though. Couple of Colts, couple of S&Ws. I don't think I paid more than $50 for any of them.

I have a gas powered (some sort of refrigerant) MAC11 that's full auto. Got it years ago when I was in high school, but now I keep it in a junk drawer in the kitchen so I can throw open the back window and hose down the turkeys in the yard before work...

Serves a purpose, it's a bit loud at 6am but I havent gotten any complaints yet!
