A brief history of the M2

I had no problem using Google Chrome.

Also, 10K per barrel seemed kind of light to me. Must go thru a lot of barrels?

Each m2 is issued to the unit with 2 barrels. Gun crews really only train and Qual with the m2 1 maybe 2 times a year. Each gunner fires about 500 to 600 rounds to train and Qual so maybe 2400 rounds per year. The armor and maintenance shops are are on the side of caution and replace the barrels way before the gun sees 10k.

Remember.....the military has a BIG budget. Replacing m2 barrels is a piss hole in the snowbank of the military budget.

My mortar platoon’s M2 had been made in 1943 by the GE Refrigerator Division, as the receiver proudly proclaimed. It was still soldiering on in 1999; I know for certain it was still on the company property book in 2001, and I’d bet any amount of money that same gun is still in the same platoon.
