870 shotgun questions?

I have a new to me, 70's era 870 tc trap gun with a 30" fixed full choke.

Will shooting steel loads thru it, kill my gun? If steel is a bad idea thru the full choke, am I better off getting the barrel tapped to except a variety of chokes or just get another dedicated barrel, if I want/need something more open?

870 barrels are pretty cheap, and easy as hell to swap. And, given that there's no guarantee that after cutting the fixed choke out there will be enough metal to thread for chokes, a new barrel is the only sure way to go.

I have three barrels for my 870 express. 26" vr barrel threaded for interchangeable choke tubes, 20" rifled deer barrel, and 18.5" h-d barrel.
