He was a lifelong Democrat then switched to R because the primary for D's in the mayor's race was huge. He wanted an easy primary path. He really was a RINO basically.

BTW, they did have a Republican governor, George Pataki.
He served three consecutive terms in the mid 90's - mid 2000's.

I understand that, but the guy said New Yorkers would never elect Republicans.
