I don't see a problem, but the lefties are taking a hissy fit over this.

Wait til' Rachel Madcow hears this one.

Goes to show the English have their loons just like we have our progressives here...and they're not limited to the antis either it seems. Who would grant any kind of a gun license to a 5 year old?? What's the point?

People in Britain need to have a license to own a long gun and pistols, except for antiques, are banned. Might as well get the kid off to a good start. Reminds me of when parents/grandparents buy kids lifetime NRA membership.

Think about it, the kid's five now. If the license is good for 5 years, he may be shooting .410s or a 28 by the time he's 10 depending on a lot of variables. Five years after that, probably 20 gauge and maybe 12.

Licensing of any form is a blasphemy however.

I get it...but he's 5 years old. Getting a head start is great but can't Dad get the license and teach junior how to shoot then he can get his own license somewhere closer to when he reaches puberty?

I'm not going to look it up, but legally, that may not be an option there.

Think about the difference in laws between states here, specifically Mass and NH regarding full auto.

since it is a birth right what the 'H' 'E' double hockey sticks is wrong with our country? Have to wait till 15 for my daughter to get her FID.

My kid. Do what you want with yours.

Both my kids took their first shots @~5, (.410 at a stationary claybird). At 7 they were in junior rifle. The younger was shooting Trap at 8, was shooting Trap without assistance at 9, glommed onto my full-sized 12 ga. and ran his first 25 straight before he turned 10. At 13 he got his NRA Apprentice Instructor Cert. All kids are different.

From the article, it seems that you need the license for even temporary possession (kind of like the current interpretation on Green Cards and MGs in Mass), so getting a kid a license early will let them do what they're suited to do, when they're ready.

I yield to your logic sir [grin]

He added: “Who would consider that a five-year-old is mature enough to handle what is a weapon of mass destruction?”

THE WMDs WERE IN BRITAIN ALL ALONG!

One yeah its not here who cares about the licensing requirements w got our own problems. Two never shot a 410 why did you pick that over a 22 just curious really

The UK antis got it backwards. The fact that some kids under 10 years old receive a shotgun certificate does not show how relaxed the firearms laws are, it shows how unbelievably strict they are. Anyone under the age of 18 can fire a shotgun only under the direct supervision of an adult and only if they have their own shotgun certificate, as they would otherwise be committing (the equivalent of) a felony just by picking up the shotgun (possession).

UK politics is dominated by city dwellers, who forget there are such things as open spaces, farmers and pests. Food comes from the supermarket, dontcha know.

Killing is bad, so why don't hunters just buy store meat that's made without hurting animals? Does it taste different?

If it's addressed to me, it was a matter of opportunity.

Our family attends the Hancock Ale and Quail Society backyard trap shoot every year. Shotgun only, distance was the backstop; not safe fro a .22. Kids were there, had a .410, set up a clay on a box 20 feet away, they held the stock under their arm, I held the butt in one hand, kid in the other....Bang! Yay!

Priceless.

Somewhere I have a picture of that....[grin]

For most people I would recommend a .22, but this was just a perfect storm of awesome.

The whole thing is retarded.#1, Why the F does anyone need a License???
#2 Wouldn't the Limeys be doing kids a service getting them....****ING DENTAL CARE????

“Maybe police firearms officers who grant licences to children are themselves gun owners and pre-disposed to believe the myth that young children who shoot will become more mature. “A gun is designed for one purpose, to kill, and the danger it poses in the mindset of the child is that it’s fun and ‘normal’ to kill things. It is a teaching of brutalisation and cruelty.”

[rolleyes]

They are proud of the NHS' socialized medicine which provides equal access to equally shitty healthcare. Imagine the MBTA as a healthcare provider and that's the NHS for you.

Puberty, or even somewhere closer to there, is too late. Individuals vary, of course, but I believe children should be shooting by the time they're 6 or 7 at the very latest. Five is a perfect age to start: they still listen to instruction at that age, and want more than anything to emulate their parents.

I was shooting small shotguns at 5-7yo (actually stared with a .22 MoSkeet gun) . In MA you can hunt and carry the gun at 12. Shotguns are a tool with many uses. As far as I am concerned no license should be needed and the minimum age should be decided by the parent.
