Recently I acquired a .38 Long Colt conversion cylinder for my Pietta 1860 type percussion snubby. I want to load up some black powder rounds so I ordered a bullet mold from Old West Bullet Molds. I decided to go with a hollow base design. I have a few of their molds and they are just outstanding. I had never cast with this type of mold before so there was a learning curve. However, once I got the mold up to temp it went smoothly. I am using a pure lead alloy. The biggest thing seems to be keeping the pin hot. Someone suggested using a hot plate to rest the pin on in between pours. I don't have one. I did find that if I cast a little hotter then usual and kept a good pace that everything worked. No matter what this type of mold is slower then the regular type. The day before I was casting .45 bullets with a 6 cavity mold. Big difference.
