The last of 10 for good reason; it cost as much as any two good or three average K98s in my collection. To get this last one, I sold my beautiful bolt MM S/42G, Winchester M1 Carbine, 1909 Spandau Gew98M, 1936 M34 Beretta, a lot of Garand parts, and $500 out of pocket. I got this piece through my connections of the K98k forum.

The BSW (Berlin-Suhler-Waffen) is the least produced K98 of the major manufacturers. BSW made K98s from 1936-1939, when the firm was rolled into Gustloffwerke early that year. Approximately 200 rifles were made in 1936, 23,800 in 1937, 49,400 in 1938, and 13,100 in 1939 for a total of 86,500.

This piece, made in early 1938 (no letter block), is all matching save the band spring, an unmarked cleaning rod, and a replacement armorer's bolt that is serialed to the rifle. The stock has been sanded, removing some of the proofs (keel) and has a light coat of varnish. Otherwise the bluing and bore are excellent.

Next search will be for an early Standard Modell, and then upgrading the lesser examples of the collection.

I like the more stylized BSW over the "byf" and "dot" codes I'm more accustomed to seeing. I think it adds to its distinction.

Once the glitter from the stars faded from my eyes, I found we have a serious problem. The sanded stock proof and bolt take-down lug wear Erma proofs (e/280), not BSW (e/4). Similarly the barrel bands wear e/214 (Berlin-Lubecker), not BSW. Parts of the bolt may be correct, but the rest can't pass muster. The barreled action is original, but I paid matching price.

So.....

I will be seeking a refund of 1/2 the price to keep it as a filler, since they are so hard to come by, or a total refund.

[shocked][crying][sad2]

For the future, I need a list of things to check. I actually saw the e/214 bands, but they didn't register at the time. With my cognitive limitations I have to live with now, I need a reminder to focus on the business before handing over the green - or is the blue?
