Ran into a M96 with an absolutely pristine bore. It looks like the bore in my Krieger barreled AR- ok, almost LOL. Metal overall very good, walnut stock has a few minor dings that would probably steam out if I so desired. Nice figure in the walnut- would probably be a beautiful stock with minimal work. All numbers match. Asking price $499, I'll offer less.

Are these GTG for vintage military competition, or would I be better served by the shorter M38? I'm already loading for 6.5mm, so plenty of projectiles to chose from in my usual stock.

Any input appreciated!

I had an 1899 M96 Swede by Mauser Obendorf. Tight 6.50 perfect bore. It shot the boat-tails off any other Mauser in my collection putting 18 rounds into the 10 ring and 2 touching first time I shot it.

Nice to hear. This is the typical Carl Gustafs. If it were a Husky I might have just bought it on the spot...

im still kicking myself for not buying any of the sedish mausers SAm Global was offering few years back. I watch the snipers sell out then the better conditioned ones then they went out of business....

I think i would go with the longer sight radius.
Look at the results from last years match the swedes are up in the mix.

well i guess not as many for

I think Perry Vintage has been won by Swedish Mausers in the past. Wasn't sure if the M96 or the shorter M38. Reading a little more, seems like most prefer the M96 for less recoil and maybe better accuracy. Really surprised at the bore condition of this one- very nice.

I have Brian's load that he uses in his K31. I know for certain mine is an OK shooter- 10-ring but just barely. Brian is an excellent shot, but it takes a great rifle to hit clean on prone and prone rapid. Not sure if a different load would run much better. The 1917 from Majspud is a tack driver, so others in the Vintage class can be for fun.

Looking at these scores, damn do I need offhand practice. I've shot as high as 92. If I could only do that consistently...

ahh yes if only....as i said before 95-99s then anything below 90 in off hand is not going to win anything. I will be practicing more off hand although with the daisy and dry fire exercise over the winter.

I don't think it matters in the least, be it a 96, 38 or even a 94.
Sometime back I saw an Obendorf m96 over at Ron's Guns in East Lyme, CT (it was marked 8mm...? It is a 6.5x55mm!).
I have an extra m96b that doesn't get used very much, but I'm not anxious to sell it. I tend to use the sporterized m96 with the little 2x EER scope, so I can see what I'm shooting at a bit better.
The iron sights on the m96 are minimal in my opinion, but if you have decent eyes, they'll work.

What are the best drills/exercises to improve offhand? Mine's been slowly getting better but still in the toilet. Other than reloading, throwing some tung oil on the special's stock, and maybe assembling a lower, looking for projects/tasks through the winter.

Here's the target. Looks like I exaggerated a little - there were 5 nines. This was the first time I ever shot it, using PRVI SP at 100 yards.

simple practice...for me its shooting 50 yards with my daisy 853 in my yard. Dry fire works aslo. put a 3/8 dot on a wall about 20' and just work on your position and trigger pull

That's a nice one, majspud, with good accuracy.

I passed on the one I was looking at. At 2nd look, bolt was matching but that's about it. Seller and I were no closer than $100 apart, so I'm sure that I'll either find a nicer example later or over time this one might come down.

Thanks. While my offhand is no great shakes, my pistol is even worse.
I think buying a .22 has made me worse. Two weeks ago I hit 20/22 plates at 25 yards with the Mk III. I was atrocious today with P226. I think it's made me lazy.

I can't give you any pistol tips. I was just getting into the high 80% range shooting cmp service pistol course of fire for fun. I have not shot pistol in years. Other than some 3-7 yard "defensive" plinking. Although same principle. You really can't fight the wobble.
