before the update there was an icon that showed if you posted in a thread, will it be brought back or is it gone forever?

I think there is an icon. On the avatar next to the thread name, there is a small box with your avatar on the bottom right corner on the threads you've replied to.

I see a small question mark box on all the threads I've replied to, apparently I need to pick out an avatar to make it look less stupid.

It's there as @SonOfAGun describes, but only for new posts unfortunately. Historical records were lost in the update.

It's coming back, we're working on it. It's going to be a custom import, and we're working on other major things first.
