.338 vs .338 lapua

hey everyone im sure this might be dumb but im not sure what the diiferance is with a .338 and a .388 lapua. Any and all info is helpful thanks.

.338 Lapua is one of many different .338 calibers. Are you comparing it to a specific one?

There are several cartridges that fire a .338 bullet. The Lapua is the most powerful, and is favored by some military units as a long-range sniping/equipment-smashing tool. It's also a favorite of some civilian long-range target shooters. It requires a big, heavy rifle. The .338 Winchester mag is a popular hunting round, usually chosen for big stuff like elk, moose and bears. It's the same overall length as a .30-06 and similar cartridges, so rifles can be built on standard-size actions. The .338 Federal came out a few years ago, and it's based on a .308 case, so it can be used in short actions like the .308, .243, etc. There are a few others like the .338 Remington Ultra Mag and a couple of Weatherbys, all mainly used for hunting larger game.

price...go .300 win mag

This is what I think of everytime I hear someone mention 338 Lapua:

hmmm i see so if i was to get a rifle that was listed as a .338 lapua could it fire any .338 round such as if i wanted to get the savage 10/110 BA could i shoot a .338 Winchester mag

No, if you are saying what I think you are saying. If it comes chambered in .300 win mag, it will fire .300 win mag; that is it. If it is chambered in .338LM, it will fire .338LM, and that is it. The 10BA is an outstanding rifle. Don't go thinking you are going to lug it around the woods though. It weighs as much as a small horse.

I shoot a .338 Win Mag. It is a really powerful cartridge and I keep it for Alaska and African plains game. The reason I went with the .338 Win Mag over the .300 Win mag was all the people I hunted with in Alaska use a .338 Win Mag. This means if you lose your ammo or they lose theirs, there is always some more available out in the bush. 225 grain rounds have a little less than 4000 ft lbs of energy at the muzzle which is more than adequate for moose and will be enough for the bears that will try to steal your moose meat from you. It costs about $3 for each trigger pull of factory ammo. The .338 Lapua is more money per round and really not made for a hunting application.

I would just as soon have a .300 Win Mag. When you shoot the .338 Win Mag, it kills on both ends.[wink]

You will find a lot of info if you do some research. Go to different manufacturers and compare ballistics also.

You can't mix and match calibers, even if they're the same diameter. Best case scenario is it's unable to chamber and worst case you blow up your gun. We have a .338 edge which is a slightly cheaper alternative to .338 lapua.
