Civil Service Promotional Exam

I've been studying for the promotional exam this September for a few months, curious to see if anyone has any experience taking/passing it. I bought the kitchen sink from Hanrahan but don't want to fork over the money for the text books because they are stupid expensive. Also bought the 2017 Scheft books. Any recommendations on areas to focus on? After asking around it sounds like the exam changes focus every time, so maybe this is a dumb question. Any help is appreciated, thanks in advance.

Check out the local libraries for the text books. You may be pleasantly surprised. There is a regional library system now if you go online and you can order from multiple libraries and have books shipped in to your closest.
