7.7 jap from 30-06 , getting ready for a match

ive got a 99 i bought at a yard sale $35 the bolt was stuck open i bought it then bought a safety online works great just cant afford to shoot it at $50 for twenty roounds

it pops up here and there for about 1.25 round usually around hunting season. You really need to reload. PPU brass is on sale once and a while from 60-80 cents or you just reform 30-06 brass

Easy enough to make as "mac1911" has stated. Granted, the Norma is pricey, but Precision Cartridge and Grafs (Hornady) offer rounds for $1.50 or less a pop.

If you're convenient to SE CT you are welcome to shoot on my 100 meter range with my assorted guaranteed reloads in 7.7 Jap. Whatever brass you empty, we can reload onsite.

Im back on the Arisaka need it to be ready for the Vintage match in October...
Still undecided its either rifle #150 or Uncle Pauls bring back Hmm

#150 is up first I have some test lots ready
200 grain 414299 cast COWW+2% tin gas checked and lubed with 2500
Case 1977 head stamped HXP 30-06 formed to 7.7
Wolf LR primer
1. 16 grains 2400
2. 17 grains 2400
3. 25 grains H4895 happens to be a 45acp case which I used for a powder scoop

a little more testing today:
100 yards, 3m rear sight setting 6 oclock point of aim. As usually with me the weather was not great for testing.
Shot the 3 targets round robin style.

16 grains 2400 200 grain bullet. Not so good and did not perform as well as the 50 yard test a while back.

17 grains 2400 tightens up a little

25 grains H4895 delivered a much better result and i hope to squeeze a little tighter groups playing with powder charges.

I would like to find a lighter bullet in the 150-165 grain range with a .314"

Velocity results
16 grains 2400
1. 1505
2. 1512
3. 1501
4. 1521
5. 1519 .... 1512 AV
17 grains 2400
1. 1585
2.1567
3. 1571
4. 1590
5.1582.....1579 AV
25 grains H4895
i only was able to pick up 3 readings...the wind and rain picked up towards the end.
1505,1521,1513 then a 2345fps reading and thats just not right and the last shot i got a error message on display? o well gives me an idea of how things are working.

Well I have one more test batch to try before the match. Sticking with the H4895 and 200 grain 314299 bullet.
I'm,going to test 25,26,27 grains of H4895 at 100 yards and hope to maybe get under 3 moa. Then I load up the best grouping powder charge and run with it at the match.

the last test did not show any improvements over the 25 grain H4895 so im giving the 7.7 one last go around with 16 grains of 2400 and a nother confirmation on the H4895.
I did mamage to get the front sight to drift over and I am more centered now and will be easier at the match I don't like holding over.
Also picked up some new factory 7.7jap

Well I know I hit the target with all 35 shots the "shhmmack" of the bullet hitting the paper confirms that...but the backer/target is 36"
Any how it shot ok and I don't know if it was me or th r loads but had a hard time finding the center of the target.... shot a 178/300 ...off hand was my best score....go figure.

Reading this series of posts with interest. Using pulled 7.62x54r bullets, (nominally 150 grs). and 45 grains of Reloader 15 (re-formed cases) I see 1.5 inch or so five shot groups at 100 meters @ 2550 fps. Increased powder charges produced no better accuracy.

Fwiw, my 1942 rifle has the bayonet, aircraft sights, monopod, dust cover, and an intact mum - a GI bring back war rifle. (Got the rifle free from my in-laws who found it in their attic.) But poor surface bluing and a dinged up stock. But a sweet chrome lined bore. If only my 3 Nagants shot this well.

That's a nice find. I was pleasantly surprised how well my 99s shoot. Factory PPU delivers some decent accuracy. I'm looking for .312" bullets to come back in stock. Have not seen any in some time other than .311 Sierra not paying those prices though. I will keep plugging with cast I'm not sure what was going on at the match. Next year I will try again.

You guys still haven't contacted Norm, I gather. His 303 British (.313" dia.) 200g coated gc bullet ($12.05 per 100) makes it unnecessary to light your casting stove:

U da man!
I haven't ordered in a while, so all of my data might be wrong. I will say that I've had good results with all previous orders though.
Good luck!

my cell phone rushed response was a bit spotty.
I have placed order with norm. No problems
.312 jacketed bullets are more than i care to pay for the application. The few places with 312 are in stock for the price i would pay will not ship to me
