I have no idea about any of them, one thing i do know is that there are lowers that take G3 mags and im quite interested in those.

I like the ones with G3 mags because the mags are stupid cheap and are high cap. Is there a reason to stay away from these style lowers?

I don't have one that takes a G3 mag, but I have a Sig 716 and I LOVE it. Kicks like a mule, but goes bang every time. Pure sex. 308, piston driven, 16" barrel, Magpul furniture. Takes SR25 mags (Magpul makes 20rnd PMags). Not sure if you can get SR25 mags preban, never checked.

Hk g3........

CMMG had their own 308 AR design going on for a while and it did use G3 mags. From what I understand there were a lot of problems with it and they ended up dropping it and switching to a DPMS pattern. (DPMS uses SR-25 mags, which seem to be quickly becoming the "standard" for 308 ARs. Even Armalite makes an AR-10 that uses SR-25 mags these days.)

I agree. I think the only real proprietary holdout is Rock River arms.

Doesn't RRA use FAL mags?

I believe Rock River actually uses a proprietary mag based on the FAL mag. Not sure how extensive the modifications are or if they remain interchangeable or not. They also use some other proprietary stuff that sort of limits you, like proprietary barrel nuts that don't work with most (any?) 3rd party float tubes. I like Rock River, but I wouldn't buy their .308 AR.

Honestly I think the DMPS pattern is the way to go if you're a DIY'er unless you can afford to buy a complete rifle from one of the premium companies like KAC or GA Precision or LMT.

I don't own a RRA 308, so I don't know if the FAL mags fit. But I do know they are different from the DPMS or Armalite style.

The SCAR 17 also uses modified SCAR mags. Although someone makes a lower that allows it to use the DPMS mags, which includes Pmags. The lower on a SCAR is not the firearm.

I agree with you JasonS. It seems to be becoming the de-facto standard. A lot of the better than mil spec stuff is out in DPMS style only. For example, you can put a Mega Maten keymod upper on your DPMS because thats what they use. As do a lot of other machinist style porn parts.

Another point of personal reference. Lilja makes DPMS style barrels only.

Some history about those G3 lowers:

About five years ago a company called Fidelis Arms in OREGON had designed and sold the G3 lowers to CMMG. Fidelis also had a large multi forum run of group buys for $500 upper/lower G3 sets.

One of those group buys was advertised HERE on NES. They also had an industry page on ar15.com.

About 3 months after taking money from their "group buys", they disappeared off the face of the planet...
Last year or so, a Sheriff Deputy from Oregon was asking around on multiple forums about people who got scammed by Fidelis.

**** those guys.

They tried to take my $500, but I saw the warning signs and initiated a chargeback. Others (especially those who paid cash or money order) lost their ass.

**** those guys. ****in *******s.

I was looking for the CMMG MK-8(?) G3 Mag Lower a while back but couldn't find any. I saw one on Broker it went for i think $900 stripped. No bolt hold open option, which i don't like.

If you got the $$$ get a POF 308, they run about $2k.

Found an old thread, looks like compatible uppers are also hard to find even when they existed. http://www.northeastshooters.com/vbulletin/threads/84848-CMMG-MK-8-G3-magazine-compatible-lower

How is the POF308? I'm in the process of picking up the P415 right now. No experience with them.

They are known as top of the barrel guns. I've handled them, they are nice. Personally I prefer DI over pistons, so I'd just look towards Armalite.

I guess it depends what you want it for. POF is supposed to be top grade, military quality stuff.

I don't tend to run a lot of ammo through my .308 AR. So I'd rather spend my money on accuracy than the ability to shoot 2000 rounds without cleaning. But to each his own.

I've got about $2100 into my .308 and I built it with Mega Maten matching upper and lower and a Lilja barrel. It doesn't get any better than that. I didn't waste money on $200 backup iron sights, a $500 bolt carrier group and a $150 muzzle brake, but instead sunk my money into the stuff that really mattered to me the way i would be using it. The receivers and the barrel. The BCG is a Rainier arms match setup. Not the cheapest, but nothing compared to a JP. I'm currently using a RRA match trigger and while its much better than a standard trigger, the gun is accurate enough where i want something better. Even then, I'll only be into it for $2300.

I had it out this weekend shooting at 100 yards for the first time and we did better than 1 moa with only a 4x scope. I'm happy so far as this was my first shot at reloading for it. I'm going to play around with COAL and the charge weight and hopefully tighten everthing up.

Don

p.s. Its all about how you are going to use the gun. If I were using it for 3 gun competition, a $500 bolt carrier and a $150 brake would make total sense. But my intention with this gun is to shoot it fairly slowly as accurately as possible. So I have a simple, light, and inexpensive brake on it.

Are there any pre-ban high capacity .308 magazines that fit DPMS lowers? Or any mods?

The answer is yes, but very expensive if you can even find one. Just curious, why not just buy a bunch of 10 rds PMAG and be done with it. If needed, just buy coupler to connect 2 mags together. Still cheaper than finding a 20rds preban DPMS mag.

If you wanted to buy pre-bans for it, what would you search on in GB?

Was there a specific brand?

By the way. I mostly agree with you. I've found that i really like the little 10 round Pmags. I find I grab them even though I have plenty of legal high caps at my disposal, at least in .223. If I'm shooting for accuracy, I find that its easier to get my support arm directly under the handguard if there is no mag sticking out.

Search KAC SR-25 preban magazine or Armalite waffle magazine. Armalite AR-10 waffle magazine may work with/without modification. KAC SR-25 preban will be a better fit. But for $100+ per mag, I'll passed.

I agree. If you shoot 3 gun, or really want high caps, its almost reason enough to go buy a SCAR. At least with a SCAR 17, you can use modified FAL mags. And the SCAR is pretty easy to make MA compliant.

I always hear mixed reviews about POF as a whole, so I was wondering what NES had to say about it because I trust the people here. Most of you, anyway.[laugh]

I have no specific intention with mine. I always saw myself going with the SCAR17 for a .308, though. I do like those... NO! Must resist. Can't afford another toy!

Any pics of the Mega Maten build? Those are billet correct?

I just purchased a POF in 308. I've probably put around 100 rounds through it, so I can't speak to its long term reliability, but so far I'm pretty happy with it. Gun is very well made and put together and uses high quality parts. Piston keeps things very clean, so you could go hundreds of rounds between cleanings. Stock trigger is not the equal of a high quality aftermarket, but it is very good. Accuracy has been around MOA using match ammo, with a 6x scope. A more talented shooter with a better scope and hand loads could definitely do better.

I've got a 14.5" barrel with a pinned muzzle brake and the gun is still fairly heavy and slightly front heavy. However, an AR in 308 is always going to be heavier than a comparable AR15 and piston guns in general tend to be slightly front weighted. Recoil is very manageable and the muzzle brake makes it fairly easy to stay on target for follow up shots. However, this gun is loud - particularly for the guy standing next to you on the firing line.:)

Finally, if you shop around you can usually find a pretty good deal. I purchased mine from a dealer in FL and had it shipped to a local FFL and saved a couple of hundred bucks off of what I could find locally, although you will have to get someone to pin the stock if you live in Mass.

Don't forget sales tax. Thats $150 on a gun like this.

If I ever buy another .308 semi auto, it'll be a SCAR 17. Pre ban mags are readily available for it, if you're willing to put in some work.
