Waiting on my tax stamp for an sbr built with a 9” barrel in 300blackout. I’m in mass so suppressing isn’t an option, wondering what the best options are for subsonic rounds in terms of lethality and reliable expansion. I don’t need the box to say “home defense” on it, I’m well aware that a round designed for hunting mid size game like whitetail has identical effect on a human sized target. I’m also aware that supersonic has more reliable expansion and higher energy, but in the extremely unlikely event of needing to use it inside the house, I’d prefer to not go deaf if I don’t have to… if I do, then so be it, but I’d like to explore options first.
I’ve been asked why I didn’t go with a .223 setup… I used to have an AR pistol and found the muzzle blast to be absolutely blinding in low light, not to mention that it was uncomfortably loud even with ear pro on. Firing something like that inside a home in the middle of the night in total darkness would be disorienting to the point of having a serious impact on my ability to think, especially if you add in that I’d already be under extreme stress. In other words, that’s a no-go for me. .223/.556 for defense belongs in a barrel 14.5” or above if you can’t suppress it, and even then it’s going to be DAMN loud but at least you won’t lose your night vision.
As a side note, if supersonic 300 blackout is the only reliable option.. has anyone ever compared the decibel levels of unsuppressed 300 and unsuppressed 223?
Thanks in advance
