NY laws concerning BB guns used to shoot at Squirrels and Pigeons?

On FB a school classmate posted:

In a tip of the hat to man's baser instincts, I bought a BB pistol to scare squirrels and pigeons away from the bird feeder on my back porch. The squirrels are persistent little bastards, and quick. The pigeons are ... pigeons ... dumb yucks.

This same individual is largely supportive of Mayor Bloomberg's efforts, BTW.
